fuel disappears from float bowl when car (71 Duster w 318 2 barrel)sits over night. Also from fuel filter which is fitted just short of carb. Where's it going?????

Check the fuel pump(check/delivery valve) for drain back. I believe one poster/member found this to be an issue when his carburetor was syphoning dry.

it MIGHT be that the plugs in the bowl bottom leeks. but i have never been able to prove it. i solved the trouble by useing an electronic pump. but DO put a low oil pressure cut off. AND an over ride switch to fill the carb before you start the engine. saves the battery, starter.

Try pulling the filler cap loose. See if that helps. Also review how the vent system works and make sure the vent to the tank is not plugged, and that the system is otherwise hooked up. Make sure that if the carb has a bowl vent valve that it is working.

fitted new manual fuel pump now carb floods after running for a minute or so. Put old pump back on good as gold. Would the needle valve be worn enough not to handle new pump pressure.?

Sounds like either to much pressure of a bad needle and seat... OK

In case it helps someone else, I fitted a carb kit including new needle and seat, refitted new pump and all is sweet. No flooding, no drain back and car starts without having to wind it over endlessly to pump fuel up. So winner winner chicken dinner!
