I want to put a roller cam in a 78 440. Anything I need to consider before buying the cam?

just need rollor lifters, new pushrods and adjustable rockers, i dont think the bigblocks have a lifter hole issue. so i think you are good to go,

if you are going with a hydraulic roller, you might be able to keep your existing rocker arms
but you will definetly need new roller lifters, and probably new pushrods

I know this is a very novice question, but if I go with 1.5 or 1.6 adj rockers is there anything I need to calculate into this before purchase?

I know these are novice questions but this is my first time with a V8 and want it done right, with the joy of doing it myself.

What are the pros and cons with 1.5 and/or 1.6 rockers?
What is the ideal setup when going roller?
Lifters: solid or hydraulic
Rockers: standard, standard adj, 1.5 adj, or 1.6 adj
Springs: How heavy?
Any other considerations?

1.6 rockers will give you a bit more lift, just want to make sure theres enough valve to pistion clerance, if you can use 1.6 go for it,
ideal set up as in what?
lifters you got to use what the cam is designed for, you nat use solid lifters on a hydraulic cam. hydraulic= good cams just have rpm limits, solid higher rpm limits more stable at higher rpms, but also you have to mantain them more often,
rockers adjustable you can set your own lash, roller rockers are all adjustable,
springs depends what the cam calls for, if you buy springs that have a inner spring its a good idea to take the inner spring out for cam break-in, also

I have a '78 440 that I am building. I want to put down over 500 hp.
My main goal is to beat or atleast keep up with my friend that has a 65 mustang putting down around 500. I need to show him that mopar is better.

500 hp VS 500 hp, some one has too lose, its more than 500 hp. where does the 500 hp come in at? 5000 rpm or 8000 rpm? what gears are you running? whats your suspension?, weight of vehicle, lots of factors, small block vs big block?

like the v-tec owners my hp to weight is better than yours...true but yours comes on at 7000 rpm mine 4500,

If you go to 1.6 rockers make sure the valve springs will handle the extra lift. As far as how heavy, go with what the cam manufacturer recommends for springs. If your looking for 500hp or a little more I'd go with a hydrualic cam, less maintanince. But that's up to you and stand by for solid proponents. As far as other considerations go, your hp expectations are not that high so a nice solid tappet cam might be the way to go and put the money you save into something else. But it all depends on what you want.

If you are doing a fresh build,you need to put together a valve train package from the cam,lifters,pushrods,springs & retainers.I don't care for ISKy,had a terrible experience.I spent alot of time on the phone with COMP.Called 4 times and got 4 different cams reccomended,but they were all close to eachother.After doing your homework with a cam company,consult a builder that is familiar with MOPAR
