Is there a way to test an engine control module

'96 2500 v-6 van. Quit while at idle some months ago. So far I have replaced the coil, distributor pickup, cap and rotor, the crank angle sensor and have done electrical tests with a meter and spark tester. Voltage gets to the right places. Still no spark. I don't want to buy a control module and still have it not run. $100 for a used one, $200 for a new one. Plus tax and shipping. It's an old van but was until now reliable and works very well to haul lumber and junk which I desperately need it to do. Pleeeeeeeeese help!

I dont know how to test it...But My suggestion would be too.. Check around and see if you can find a Factory Shop manual for the test procedures so you can check it.....

Most of the time yes.. Kind of a generic code if its faulty.... But some will act stupid if their is like No Communication per say... Even if you have a scan tool or a factory DBR tester you'll still have to use the drop down test menu to trace it back to the ecu from the book. unless you find it on line.. Kind of a real bitch for us older guy's.... lol

Just my 2 cents

Don't test it for resistance or continuity with an electrical meter. Doing so can burn out sensitive circuits with the voltage in the meter. My Mechanic son has seen this done to vehicles towed to the shop he works at.

A proper shop manual test procedures is the only way I'd try or a Dealer, each one sucks.

I should have responded to this thread sooner but ya know how it is. I got busy with too many other things. It was indeed a bad control module. I ordered one from Rock Auto and it fired right up. It ran for a while and the engine wouldn't start. Weak spark. I swapped in a junkyard coil and that did the trick. The brand new coil that I got from Autozone failed. I don't know why other than everything comes from Chinese factories which don't care about quality control

At O'Reilly, we can test modules. Try bringing it in, see what the manager has to say.
