Timing on 383

Hey everyone. So I need to re-set the timing on my 1968 chrysler newport with a 383 in it. I went and bought a timing light so I can learn how to do this and can't figure it out or find how to do it on the internet. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

do you have a advance timing light or a standard? if its advance set the dial to what you want it to be, put the red and black clamps on the battery, the other clamp thats by its self goes to the number 1 plug wire, pull the vacuum advance off the distributor and plug it. fire up the engine and point the gun at the timing marks and pointer, if its a advance timming light and you have it set for 10 deg turn the dist' till the mark lines up to 0tdc if its a standard turn the dizzy till you get the deg you want on the pointer if you want 10 deg the pointer will line up with 10deg, hope this is what you looking for
