Voltage regulator Eater! Help! :)

I have a 1973 Dodge Challenger Rallye. with a 440/727. and i dont know why this thing is eating voltage regs. i put a new V.Reg in and make sure its grounded before i reconnect the pin. i start the car and just rev a little bit and it works great!. But then after about 30-40 seconds it spikes the voltage in the cab and blows my fusible link. 4th try. I am now on my 5th. someone had told me it could be the ballast resistor. i dont see a problem with thowing a $3.00 part at it. I'm just getting kinda burned out on this car and any advice would greatly appericated :) Thank you in Advance

your alternator could be grounding out, replace that, check and make sure that the wires running along the intake manifold arnt cracked. run a bolt on the inside of the cowl and actually bolt that damn regulator to the firewall. Then pull the bulk head connectors out and check to see if any of the big red or big black wires are tost. clean them real good with a wire toothbrush or something then fire her up. I bet you thats all you need to do. ive done it plenty of times
