Cool 383 to 496 stroker

I'm looking into a stroker kit for a 1970 383 I have waiting to be put into my 1971 roadrunner. Does anyone has experience with this? Things to look out for and expect?

Alot of folks go to 440source, or http://www.musclemotorsracing.com/ for these. MM has a good website. The most I have heard is that you MAY need to relieve the bottom of the block for the crankshaft throw clearance. But in the article it was done with a die grinder. So it didn't seem that a whole lot of material needed to be removed, or with a whole lot of precision.

Stroked Fords, Mopars and Chevys... Only real issue was notching the block for rod cap or rod cap bolt clearance ... But if your gonna do your own assembly this will be easy.

The cam selection can be tricky because stroke sucks up duration quickly. I would search old Engine Masters magazines. Many are stroked and they post the RPM curves so it may help.

I used a 440source kit to build my 493 out of a 440 block. You will have to clearance the block for sure as with my 440 I used a 4.15 crank and it cleared everywhere but was very close to the oil pickup boss in the block so I had to do a little grinding. With the 383 low block you will have to check it real close and do some grinding as you wont have as much room as my 440 RB block but its no big deal. My 440source kit was pretty good but I checked everything and my piston pins were a tad tight in the rods. But that was fine with me as I like to fit my pins anyway which was no problem. For the price the 440source kit was fine. I see some who say dont use it but mine checked out good and I have been running it hard.

As for a cam I went with a custom grind flat tapped solid cam from Dwayne Porter as he speced it out and then ground and nitrided the cam and I love it. He is very good with Mopars as he runs "Ported Head Service" and I really like the cam he ground for me. Good luck , Ron
