Emissons Question

My 74 Charger SE 318 Poly has the lovely emissions system and wanted to know if u really need it? I dont have the Vac Amp or Air Cleaner attached, Egr and Vac Tees are plugged except for Brake Booster, PCV & Dizzy. Ideas or suggestions appreciated.

a 1974 poly? i think you can desmog it. but i think you should keep the PCV valve, and dist hose. it might have a control valve going to the dist. you might be able to by pass it. but the vac dist canister might be diff for that change. DO mark all hoses you plan to remove. and keep old parts. and make good notes incase you want to go back. some times the engine in those years for that model will ping at lite to mid throttle. i think this can be adjusted with a dist vac chamber that is adjustable. some are some are not. if the chamber has a hex housing next to the hose connection it is adjustable. with a hex wrench in the hose fitting. you can adjust the the ignition advance at mid load.

K thanks. The car originally had a 5.9 360 but someone took it out and put this 318 poly.

OK the poly is not a bad engine. in cars 1966 was the last year. that advantage you have is that your engine has a non-smog cam. if you get the chrysler electronic ignition you will do good to remove all the smog hoses for the ignition system. course you know it is a solid lifter cam, and needs adjusted time to time. a lot of sites have the way to adjust the valves. cant remember the clearance setting. MIGHT BE .010 intake exh valve .012-.014" but recheck that. you can set them cold but add .001 to intake, .002 to exh . EDIT: AD. if the solid lifters make noise but are set right dont close the gap up that will cause them to burn the valve. the ext will burn faster under that.

Robert, are you really sure this is a Poly? I recall looking at numbers that said that but head numbers were LA, which don't fit on a Poly.

Does it have 5 valve cover bolts in the flange = LA

How about 10 bolts in the flange= Magnum.

Or 2 bolt heads on top of the valve cover (none in flange) = Poly.

The cast # on drivers side of block says poly when u look it up. The heads are LA 318 and VC's are 5 bolts. I got the car runnin but still gotta tune the carb more.

K thanks. Gas tank will next thing to do.

RacerHog 10-29-2014 04:08 PM

You could run a clear fuel "Glass" filter between the fuel tank line and the fuel pump. That way you can see if any trash is coming up from the tank?
:)

Put the engine timing around 16*-18* at idle... Using your timing light. :)
Idle Hot in Park>>> 850 RPM....

K will do and I dont have the tank on right now, just a clear jug of fuel goin to pump with clear filter. The tank that I've got the one with the hump = more $

Good Deal....
