Exhaust gaskets
 

Does any one know who makes the best header gaskets???? All of a sudden I have developed a exhaust leak at the header to head... The gaskets were paper when I put them on and were ok at first but now are leaking on the left bank.... It might be because I had to loosen them to get the oil pan off and just retightened them and they were ok but started leaking this week and now are getting worse... I hate the paper gaskets... What would you recommend to use for a trouble free fix....Thanks for the help...Bill:)

When I replaced my valley pan on my 383, I used a fel-pro kit that came with really good exhaust gaskets. I put a set on when I had the heads off. Been very good so far. Only time will really tell. Good luck.

My Son has some black grafite gaskets that came in a stock rebuild kit we had around here, can't remember the manufacturer but holding up two years now.

Bill, I like the Mr.Gasket ultra seals #5936 BB. Put them on about 5 years ago, I have tried aluminum, copper gaskets, but these have been the best so far.

Remflex.

You have to be careful when installing, but they have the highest compression ratio of anything I've seen. 30 year old warped header flanges blew out with everything else.

Put these in over a year ago and no leaks - period.
I'm pretty much sold on them.

Thanks All, I will check and see what is available here locally and if nothing pans out I'll have to order them... There is a car show this weekend and don't want to have the exhaust leaking when I pull in... So hopefully they will have a set at the parts store that does handle a lot of Mr.Gasket stuff... Mostly Chevrolet junk... We are all a rare breed with Mopar so I'm told... Until they get smoked by the Mo-Power...:laugh::yikes:...Bill

Good luck! Believe it or not, I found the exhaust manifold flange gaskets at carquest this past weekend, in stock! It was my only choice!

Well the out come of my local search was gaskets from Mr. Gasket they are paper no metal.. I don't know if I want to use them or not... I think the number is 358 of the gaskets... Any thoughts??? I don't want to keep having to do this over and over....Bill

As I said before, I had the same problem and didn't want to spend the $$$ for new "good" headers. The Remflex worked as advertised. There are a few reviews on youtube you can check out. IIRC the 440 gaskets were about $40.

Archer, I have good headers just looking for good gaskets and my sources are limited to the local shops and mail order... I don't see any rim-flex gaskets in Jegs or Summits catalog I guess I will have to go online and check...I haven't had much time to check for gaskets, my wife was rushed to the hospital Monday and will be staying for a while.. but Thanks for the info ...Bill

i remember when Mr. Gasket first came out. most of us laughed and laughed and laughed. we thought it was joke. a start up company with ONLY ONE product !!!!

General comments concerning gaskets, for anyone interested.

If both matting surfaces are perfectly flat and smooth, and the bolts/fasteners are torqued correctly, the gasket size or material becomes much less on an issue. I've even heard some machinists argue against using gaskets. The problems arise, where the matting surfaces have slight imperfections. That allows an easier "escape route" for the gases or liquids and that's where the leaks or "blow-outs" come from.

I think the only reason it even started leaking was because I had to remove/loosen the left side to get the oil pan off... I didn't want to remove the end bolts (front & rear) because of the coolant issue so I just tightened everything back up after I did the one piece pan gasket.. it was leaking a little and has gotten worse.. So the key is there is no short cuts and I don't ever get lucky so DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME.. This is a rule I live buy when it is someone else's car I guess it is time for mine too...Bill

I'll keep you posted on my Sweetie they are doing all kind of test and not found anything yet... I almost lost her.. She has internal bleeding and has had 4 units of blood so far... They checked all the orfices and they are all good. She is going to swallow a camera and it will take 57,000 pictures of the digestive tract . it just amazes me the technology they have today... So the outcome of the exhaust leak was the bolts were loose and blew the gaskets out.. In a couple of places...I used the Mr. Gasket gaskets and it was real easy to do... I don't know why but it seems more responsive too...And it is a lot quieter than it has been for a long time... I thought I had a sticky lifter since I put the engine in the car and it must of been an exhaust leak because it is gone now... :hello: ...Bill:slap:

My wife is feeling better and still has a lot of test to go through but she is on Iron and vitamins they gave her 4 units of blood in the hospital... Its funny she has been see a cardiologist for her rapid heart rate and a bunch of Drs. and they were treating the heart.. The heart was the out come of the anemia . . she finally went to a new Dr. (smoking hot female) and she sent her straight to the hospital with all her organs shutting down from the anemia she told her she was a close to death as they come...And all the organs were in shut down mode.. I cant imagine what would of happened if we didn't go to this New Dr. She was really pissed that they didn't catch it sooner.. The cardiologist was on the same team as her husband...(I would have loved to be a fly on the wall that night when she got home) Now that she has gotten some of her strength back they can do more tests.. And hopefully they can find the problem....Bill

will be keeping y'all in my prayers. i lost my mom due to heart trouble plus other health issues on march 13th this year.

Sorry for your loss Mike...Thank you for the prayers... I lost my Mom to cancer at age 60... Still miss her to this day...Seems she was what kept the family together...Bill

we miss her alot. my wife used to call her everyday to see how she was doing. she would have been 60 on june 2nd.
