First 440 build
 
I have a 1975 Dodge W100 with a 78 440 under the hood that has a Edelbrock 600cfm carb and a Edelbrock streetmaster intake other then that stock. I want to get as much torque out of it i can without doing a complete tear down. I have a set headers just laying around i figure i will put on. I can get a Lunati Voodoo 250/256 hyd cam for basically nothing as well as a gear drive timing set. Would that be worth doing or should i go a different direction? I also have a set of 906 heads just laying around the garage i could use but what would be the best set up for the heads i don't want to put them on stock if im going to use them? The truck is going to be used at local mudfest and on some trails it will not be drove on the street. It has stock 1/2 ton axles with 35x12.5 tires right now. It will eventually get 3/4 ton axles 40" to 44" tires and stiffer gears. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

Welcome!

I'd run 3" exhaust with thouse headers as that will help it to breath better. You may need to rejet the carb or go with a 650CFM when you swap cams. I'm not sure what to do with the head minus cleaning them up and see about getting some more flow out of them.

As for the axles, a 3/4T front is no different than a 1/2T minus the lug pattern. Save your money and buy a D60 front/rear when you get ready to upgrade to 40"+ tires.

The gear drive is a little noisy but since your mudding it that shouldn't be any issue.

So your saying to run Dana 60 1 ton because the 3/4 ton is no different then 1/2 ton besides bold pattern?

For the front axle, yes. Same R&P size, axle shaft diameter/spline count, u-joint size, etc.

What kind of numbers would a 68 440 with stock steel crank keith black quench dome hyperutetic pistons, 250/256 .454 lift cam, 906 heads port and polished with aluminum 1.5 roller rockers, edelbrock streemaster intake port and polished, carb spacer plate and edelbrock 1406 600cfm carb?

For your cam, I'm no good. I'd call Comp Cams or Crane cams and see what they say as they would know best.

As far as what you'd be pushing, assuming you are not boring the block, I'd estimate 450/475, just a guess though. There are others on here that can give you a better number.
