harmonic balancer 318 differences?
 
Hi, I am new here.

I had a coronet 440 station wagon with a 318 cid engine (mexican version 4V) This is the question: I am making a complete rebuild and the mechanic tell me that I have to change the harmonic balancer. I was looking in the internet and I see in the catalogs that are different models (69 and older, 70-72, 76-up) and the prices change a lot. My engine is a 1968, it had forged crank I think but I donīt know if it was replaced or no, and in this rebuild I will use aluminum pistons with dome because I will put 1975 heads to preserve the compression.

Which harmonic balancer I should buy? Thank you a lot for your answers

Welcome, can you post the catalog your looking at?

All LA 318's are internally balanced and use the same balancer. There may be differences in industrial, marine engines.

The Dorman 594-021 is correct.

SFI certifies racing equipment.

Older stylee There is a difference in the pulley bolt pattern. Also in the timing mark positions.. Pulley Can be fixed with a file to fit what ever dampener you have. SFI dampeners are great BUT usually have closet tolerances than stock so it may be a tight fit on the crank.. What ever you are going to use get everything and then have it balanced as an assembly... Also depends on the timing cover which side the water outlet is on..

Thanks, unfortunately my car was "stored" for about 7 years, and this is the time for make a rebuild, I said that because I donīt remember where the timing marks was in the chain cover, but I remember that the cover was new and the marks are on the wrong side for my model. Maybe the wrong side marks in the cover, and the wrong side marks in the balancer can get a correct timing? (-x- = +) well thatīs an idea, I am amateur, and really know about nothing about the dampers, The mechanic said I have to change it, donīt tell me that he can fix it, but I am going to question him. Thank you.

Trying to match the cover can be a problem and I would not worry about it. The balance will be internal (neutral) and not an issue, just be sure the new balancer has no extra material in one spot and is smooth all the way around.

Finding Top Dead Center is straight forward and can be found on You Tube. I take a hacksaw blade and cut a slot in the balancer at TDC with it on the engine. This is not difficult and will assure accuracy for ignition timing.

I agree, as long as the damper hasn't spun you can mark it for TDC to your cover, so go new.
