Timing Gear problem

A couple of mounth ago I purchased Mopar Performance Timing gears. through summit. I installed the gears with my selection of camshafts and lifters. I set marks at the normal 6 oclock/ 12 oclock set up and after 2 mounths of chasing overheating & fuel problems and the car just running like crap. I decided to tear the motor back down and see what the hell was going on. What I found by shear luck By maching the gear with another set was the Crank gear in the set was marked wrong and was 4 teeth off. So with it timed heads up I was running retarded by who knows how much. But I just wanted to get the word out To all here to be careful when using Mopar gear sets. This problem ended up costing me a bunch of money trying to solve the issues I was having. fuel, timing, cooling, and above all the baldness I have now accured From this blunder someone at the factory has caused by there malfunction, or just not caring, its just not acceptable in todays world. I am just very thankful it didnt cause major engine/valve train damage in the process. :naughty: Bill

I am surprised it even ran at all. Usually one tooth off will kill the deal. Have you corrected it yet?

Alot of people have said that but it did I guess if you crank the dizzy around it compensated for it. IDK...The problem is corrected and the car runs great. in fact it will spin the tires through 2nd gear of the built 904 and thats with 276:1 gear. even if I get on at about 10-15 mph. with comp t/a tires.

That's great news after such a nightmare!

You should have taken a picture of the gear. Then again if you had degreed your new cam you would have found the problem. Tuirning the dis wouldn't fix that problem.. But good catch !

I built this as a driver so I just did'nt get crazy with the build. The 10% ethanol and the fuel just sucks so I built it up enough to have fun but still run pump fuel. And it does real well on it, and is real fast... I also add Marvel Mystery oil added to the gas to help with upper cylinder lubrication and add zinc to the oil for the flat tappets. Boy I wish the government would leave things alone for us performance guys

I called summit and gave them the heads up and they contacted Mopar. I dont think it would have mattered if I degreed the cam because I think all the marks on the crank gear were off. all the marks heads up, +4* -4*were at the key ways which is wrong. I did take pictures and can text them to you if you want to see them. send me a PM and your cell number. I didnt degree the cam because it was being built for the street. Just a driver to run on pump fuel 10% ethanol, cast heads, cam, lifters,8.5 pistons, headers,Alum. intake, carb, dist. etc. good runner but not a race car. And I dont think I would want much more for a street car. It is fast as hell and spins if you arent careful. I dont need any tickets at my age or to be known as a heller. Bill

I can understand the ticket thing. Many years ago in my younger days I got one for 50 in a 25 and exhibition of speed Cop said i left 50 ft of rubber when I hit 2th

Glad you got it all back together there Bill..... Now a little fine tuning.... And go have lots of fun before summer ends....
