62 727 Torqueflite won't go into gear

I just picked up a 62 Chrysler Newport with the push button 727 Torqueflite transmission. It will not go into any gears. The trans was checked and inspected by a local transmission shop and the trans itself checked out fine. I checked the push button assembly and it's good. I've gone through the cable adjustment procedure and it will now only lock into Rev occasionally with a slight higher rpm but it isn't consistent. I'm not familiar with this cable and linkage setup. My next plan was to drop the pan and check the valve body but if you have any suggestions what I can check before doing that let me know. Or if there's a better cable adjustment procedure.

If it has been setting for years ?? I would drop the pan and change the filter & fluid

The car hasn't been sitting but maybe 6 months. The guy drove it daily and said one day he parked it and it was stuck in neutral position. Trans shop checked everything and cleaned out the valve body and it worked for a few weeks and did it again so I'm guessing it's that. I just picked this up a few days ago. And I did check that link yesterday but I think that procedure is for console shift which is different. When I did the adjustment it ended up being 3 holes off from where it was to begin with.

if the shifter is pushbutton or lever does not matter. the adjustment is at the trans and that is the same. i found a diff adjustment sounds like a good one to me. http://www.moparfins.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=4527

You have to raise the car to a safe position and have someone push the buttons while you observe the shift pawl on the tranny for movement. If this moves to the correct detent consistently the problem resides in the transmission. You must verify the correct position of the shift pawl for all gears and ensure the push buttons move freely in and out so when one is pushed the others are fully released. I'm going to drop the pan tonight and check out everything in there and make sure everything is moving correctly.
