67 Charger transmission

67 Charger transmission
I'm thinking about buying a 67 Charger with a 383 4 bbl auto. Anyway, the problem is the classic "front transmission seal is leaking". I haven't done much transmission work but I know this is often the tip of the iceberg. It's otherwise a nice car and I'm hoping someone with more experience can tell me if it's easier to take it apart and fix the seal (and who knows what else) or just put in a rebuild. Any advice is appreciated!

If the transmission works well, install a new front seal, rear seal and replace the transmission screen filter, pan gasket and give the transmission a good cleaning to freshen it all up before reinstallation.
One of the reasons for that front seal leaking may be because the car hasn't been driven and the seal dried up.

Its not that hard, dont be afraid. Besides, have you ever met a trans guy that was smarter than you!!!! With a pro manual, I would not be afraid to rebuild my own trans. I have a friend at work who is a toolmaker. He never rebuilt a trans.
He bought the manuals and rebuilt one for a 97 Ram manual, AND a Ram diesel auto trans! 2 years later, no problems! Dont be afraid to try!

Let a pro do it...it cost me 340 bucks for a clean out and re-seal...727 big block tranny...make sure you check the neck of the torque convertor and make sure it isn't pitted and or worn..that can eat up your front seal also

What you should do is remove the front pump replace the pump bushing, & seals, pan gasket and filter and the shifter seal and use an OEM rear seal for the drive shaft. (it will have the protective boot as part of the seal.
I have rebuilt several 727 and a 904 Just take your time.
Would be a good time to install a mopar performance deep trans pan and get the rigid silicon covered pan gasket

It depends on what you're doing.... A trans rebuild isn't difficult. Pulling the pump out and replacing the seal and gasket isn't hard at all.

Thanks for all your advice! Scotts74birds, your comment about being smart sealed the verdict: I'll make a low-ball offer (assuming the tranny's bad) and rebuild it myself. Anyway it looks like there's lots of help available here!

Good for you! I'm one of the cheapest folks here, so I will always try to do it myself if I can! My friend got the manuals and parts through a place in the Northwest, and they were great for advice also, he said. I will ask him the name and post it this week.

Make sure it is the pump seal befor you take the tranny out. Some times the dip stick seal or other gaskets can leak and look like the front seal.
Other than that all very good advice. Glad to see you aren't afraid to do it your self. They are not all that hard but you should get a good book to help out.
The worst part is the heft of it all. You can rent tranny jacks, I made a plate that sits on my floor jack and captures the pan. Works good.
