727 rebuild help
 

I am rebuilding my 727 36rh on my tow vehicle and I need a little help. I have built several th350s but the 727 is new to me.

Okay my tranny was slipping bad and I checked everything but the valve body before I decided to rebuild. I tow a 7500 pound camper when this truck and with 180,000 miles I figured it was best not to risk a breakdown.

Upon tearing the tranny down I was hoping to see something that was a red flag but everything looks pretty good bands clutches the usual culprits.

The only thing that stands out is some severe scoring/groves on the output shaft support where it slides into the tranny. The scoring is not on the inside where it supports the output shaft but on the outside where it sits in the low and reverse drum. So is this scoring normal? There are some pretty deep groves cut into both and could this cause the slipping? I noticed one lube hole on the output shaft support so I assume this is there so the low drum can spin freely. It does spin on it correct? I also realize that with these groves some metal could have got into something and is causing the slipping. Any and all advice is deeply appreciated.

What year is the vehicle ? A 36rh ?? or is it a 42rh overdrive ? When did it slip ? Takeoff ? shifting ? what gear ?

Ok I am going to post again since I seem to be logged in now.

94 ram 250 came equipped with towing package from factory. I also own another 94 250 van don't ask me why. I just like vans. Anyway I am assuming that since this van has the towing package the stronger tranny in my opinion was placed in it. I am positive that it is a 3 speed 36rh. My other van is a 42rh and gets much better gas mileage.

I also own a 72 Alfa Romeo spider that is my play toy.

The slipping was in every gear but maybe reverse. The worst was the 1 2 shift. Then when in 3rd if I accelerated hard and it had to downshift it would slip so bad the vehicle would jump from surging. I had to drive it veRy gently to shift w out bad slippage. Shifting manually at higher rpms would make it slip more. I hope some of this info helps.

I will try and post pics tomorrow. I got my rebuild kit today and am anxious to start,but I still have a lot of cleaning to do. Cleaning is the worst.

I am a poor teacher who loves camping and hiking. The van isn't worth much but I like it, and have slept in it many nights when traveling to hiking trails. The kids often sleep in it instead of the camper when on camping trips.

A 36 rh is a three speed trans BUT it is a variation of the smaller 904 trans 42rh is a 727 style with an overdrive. Probably easier than the Turbo350 to rebuild. I used to take the case & big parts to local machine shop and have them cleaned...
