727 Trans ID
 

Trying to identify my trans before ordering a new starter ring, would like to have parts on hand before I start. '64 Sport Fury with a 440/727, I know the motor is not original, not sure if the trans is original.

Numbers on the drivers side above the pan rail are J28011540 4127096 as best I can determine, photo attached. Can anyone decode or direct me to a page to do so?

I located a reference on another site, says #'s 2801540 is a 727 from "Chrysler 67-68 8 440 w/o H/per, Dodge 67-68 8 440 w/o H/per, Imperial 67-78 and Plymouth 67-68 8 440 w/o H/per". Have no idea what the "J" or additional numbers at the end, 4127096 are. Any ideas?

So, how do I determine what starter/converter gear ring I need before pulling the trans? Mine acts as if it's worn, causing hard starting/spinning occasionally, I'm new to MOPAR and have no idea what to look for, size, tooth count, etc.

I worked for a Chrysler dealer. I rarely heard of or saw a ring gear go bad. 99.9% of the time it's just a bad/weak starter that's kicking out while cranking. A weak battery can cause that as well. I'd do a starter swap out if the battery checks out before pulling the tranny and replacing the ring gear. I've seen a thing or two.

It seams like it would be more cost effective to just replace the entire converter or send yours off and have it rebuilt.

Kuvasz, The starter sounds strong when it engages, but I'll pull the inspection/dust cover before I get too excited and check it out. Is there anything in particular to look for in a new starter, tooth count, etc? I know the engine info.

Iowan, In the lower 48 that would be reasonable, but here in Alaska the shipping would probably be more than the cost of a converter. I'm capable of rebuilding/welding a new ring if it came to that.

Nope! Mopar was pretty user friendly with their starters. I can't tell you how many times I've seen these things do just what you're saying and it's always the starter. It's difficult to diagnose from my desk here. Ring gears that are bad sound like you're grinding spoons and forks in your garbage disposal.

I put a Delco starter in my 383 Dart. That car spins over like it has 5 batteries pushing it.

Kuvasz, That's encouraging, I found a Powermaster on amazon for a great price and free delivery. When I install it I'll check out the teeth on the ring gear for wear, I'd much rather change out a starter than pull the trans, I'm 76 with lots of energy but fade fast, lol.

What was happening is the starter would engage flawlessly for la while, then just hit and spin, sometimes 8 or 10 times before it would finally engage and start the car. Never heard any garbage grinding like you mention.

I see some Powermaster starters specify "with nose, adjustable (p/n 9523), and some have no snout, while some don't specify any nose information, are they all the same and what's adjustable about it?

The car is in the paint shop now so don't have access to look, do I need a starter with nose cone or without nose cone? I'd like to get one ordered.

Chrysler used the same starters back then on their 6 cylinders and 8 cylinders. All the ones I changed had a cone shape. I feel your pain (literally). I'm 67, crawling under and around is a bit more painful.

a lot of folks were putting dakota starters in their rigs bc they were tourqey and smaller. :D

It's funny how Chrysler usually isn't so interchangeable with parts with the exception of their starters. My Dart 383 had a minivan starter in it at one time so said the previous owner a 42-year Chrysler mechanic. .

I don't know. It was changed out before I got it.

Starter problem update
 

I received a new starter the other day, it came with a bushing for the upper mounting hold which was oversized, When I pulled the old starter there was no bushing which I assume was allowing the starter to rotate slightly, enough to cause clearance issues with the ring gear. The new starter works great, hasn't missed a beat, the starter ring gear looks fine and I don't see any damage to the starter pinion gear.

Anyone know why these starters have the top mounting hold oversized? The starter I removed was a JEGS piece, the new starter is a Powermaster.

One side used a stud, nut, and washer, and the other side used a bolt with an afixed washer....

Right, I was surprised the upper bolt hole is oversized requiring a sleeve, on the new starter as well. The old starter didn't have the sleeve and I suspect the starter was rotating enough with torque to move the pinion away from the ring gear. Whoever installed the last starter left it out, the new starter came with a sleeve.
