Leaking transmission - what to look for?

I have a 1970 Dodge D100 pickup with an automatic transmission that has been leaking transmission fluid slowly for years. What things should I look for on where/how/why it is leaking? The motor was originally a 360 when I bought the truck, I then put it back to the original 318. Had some issues with the torque converter not matching up and I still get a clanging sound sometimes when putting it in gear.

I'm a fair to good mechanic, "parts hanger" is a term I recently picked up that suits me, but I'm just not that familiar with what to look for on an automatic transmission for leaks.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

You can replace most of the seals except the pump without removing the trans. Biggest spot to look at would be the dipstick tube. IF you want leak free make sure the pan is straight and use the nylon renforced gasket $25.. NO sealer, just make sure the surfaces are clean.. Use a dab of silicon on the O rings- helps them slide in easy. Let dry for a few hours before adding fluid
