i had a spicer posi put in my 01 dak V6. with a 4.10 gear. but i knew i did not want an auburn as they cant be rebuilt. i know i know posi is not the right word. but it is a spicer and. has clutches. it had a 3.55 gear and was getting bad MPG. so i thought i might as well get some power. i drive in town only, 35 - 50 MPH. with the 4.10 gear my MPG went from 8-9 to 11-12. cause at 30 MPH the O.D. comes in and my RPM go down to 1300 RPM, at light throttle. EDIT: update 8-24-14. i found my info on my 01 dak gear change. i know you have a 8 3/4 and mine is a 8 1/4. i had a dana / spicer locker 84852 put in. a install kit DRK303B was installed. on 7-28-11 have had no trouble. even thou they call a locker it has clutches. i know i didnt want a true locker for a mild street truck.

Thanks
im looking at the SPARTEN brand its a drop in for the carrieryou remove the spider gears and this slips in place of them
without removing or changing the carrier

im hoping someone on the forum has used them or fimilar with the type

sounds like a good setup. will the gear setting need to be readjusted? if not that sounds great. but if you do have to readjust the gear. here is a hint if you dont have a travel indacator. use your micrometer and find a paper that is a little over the top clearance, say .004 try a newspaper. and check a cigarette paper .001-.002? and check other papers. if the clearance is right one paper will shear and the other will not shear.

Any advice here is much appreciated
I was researching lockers at randy s R P
he has a tec page but no advice like that
things Ive learned
set the pinion 1st , need to replace the crush sleeve if I need to back off the shims ...so start with minimal and wrk up .
pre set the carrier close and wrk it 2nd set the bearing preload tork to 150ft lbs
i will continu to reveiw and make notes
any advice again I will take it
have u seen the conversion kits for the axle bearings? it replaces the original retainers whats your opinion

are you talking about what is called "green bearings" ? most say they are the thing to use. but one guy said he did not like them. i for get the details on rear bearings. i would do / go with anything Randys says. the paper thickness idea comes from my dad. he had a 35 ply that went throu rear ends. till a machinist friend showed dad that the paper can show the gear clearance. i helped a guy on a gas funny car in the late 60s. he would set the pinion deep and tight. so that under power the gear was lined up. a race ONLY set up.

There is so much info and advice I like your input
here is a part number from summit racing dcc5249444

i think that one is called "green bearings". i think it goes on WITH OUT pressing them on. i always hated pressing bearings on. but you might have to have the old bearings pressed off. you might be able grind them off with a cutoff wheel. BUT be VERY careful. if you touch the shaft you might have trouble. . i advise you talk to an expert on the subject.

Thats what I thought,,,thats the way I want to go now for this sparten locker have u heard of it its supposed to slip into the existing carrier

moe7404 08-31-2014 09:03 PM

the career bearings have to be set. 1. the carrier bearing have to be tightend from each side with a lot of pressure. 2 at the same time the gear back lash has to be set. it is not easy. if you have not done it OR shown how. hire it done.

What about the SPARTEN brand locking diff. Any one familar with it ?

moe7404 09-17-2014 12:50 PM

i just looked up " SPARTEN brand locking diff". to me it a pears to be FULL locker. I,E, no clutches. solid metal to metal. have not had one. but my guess is it will g o CLUNK!!!!!. may not be what you need for street. but might be fine off road that has some give to a tire getting power very fast.

Green bearings do need to be pressed on. The disadvantages to the green bearings is that they cannot carry side loads like the originals. Check the ring gear backlash before you remove it..

moe7404 09-20-2014 07:10 PM

well you have done your research. i did not know the "green bearings" are not for side load. sounds like for the street stay with stock bearings. not that love them. Chrysler has made a lot of things i was not found of. but he may be the dictator but he is MY dictator.
