RV 440/727 trans, driveshaft options
 
Hey guys,
I have a buddy who purchased a complete, low mileage, good running and driving 70's RV that had a 440/727 in it.
He pulled em and sold it all to me for $100, all the wiring, solenoid, regulator, guages, etc. Etc., complete.

However, I've never used an RV motor/trans before, I know they're pretty similar with minor differences and potentially HD trans internals, HP rods etc.
My thought is to throw it all in my 69 coronet
(since the orig 318 2 bbl seems to be stuck and it has an old 904 in it)
But the 727 has the yoke (like the diff) on the output shaft, (can i unbolt the yoke and use a standard 727 slip yoke) and
I was wondering what my options are for a driveshaft set-up???

I figured some of you guys have used RV motors/trans' before so someone might be able to give me some advice....

have you possibly thought about using a 518 transmission instead of the 727? then you would get overdrive.

i have also hear those rv engine usually choked by smog parts so you usually have to pretty much rebuild the top end of the engine to gain some performance.

I have actually,
My original plan was to pick up a modern magnum v8 and trans out of a 2000's dodge 2wd truck and swap the whole set-up into my 69 'net (fuel injection etc.) but since my buddy had this complete 440/727 and since it was so cheap I just figured "why not use it?"

Eventually, I'd like to swap in a modern "hemi" but they're outta my price range budget right now with the work I need to do to my 'net.

And you're right, the later RV motors have low compression and emissions, I've got some closed chambered 452 heads to boost compression that im going to swap on and possibly thinner head gaskets (once i know how far the pistons sit in the hole, probably alot) and ill pull the emissions equip. Install mild cam, intake, headers, carb, etc.

You could just use your 727 off your current 383 also... :)

Lots of clearance I think they are .180 below the deck.. He said he has a 904

That's correct,
my 67 Satellite is a 383/727, but since its running, I don't want to "rob Peter to pay Paul" ya know.
The current motor/trans in my 69 net is a 318/904.

I was thinking the same thing about piston-deck height as well.

But,
am I S.O.L. using this RV 727 because of the bolt-on output shaft yoke (instead of slip yoke)?

Maybe just pick up a different trans....
Or
Swap out the rear drum and tail-shaft housing in this case?

That's not a bad idea Bob,
I thought about that also.

I was just wondering if there was a "quick fix", especially since the RV 727's have heavy duty internals, but if I swap the tail...

could maybe just get a custom drive shaft made for it so you can keep the transmission as it is.

I thought about that as well,
I should've grabbed the dang driveshaft from the motor home while I was at it, dang it.
Then I could've just had it shortened...
