overcharging? how high is too high?
My chrome Powermaster 90 amp alt is running 15.10 volts
I replaced the voltage reg yesterday with the most expensive one I could find (short of the date coded resto pieces) Battery voltage 12.6 voltage coming out of bulkhead (blue wire) ignition on (not running) 11.7 I put a VM on the run feed side of the ballast 10.7 Everytime I turn on the ignition I hear my Crane PS91 ign coil click. I unglugged the ign coil then the voltage at the ballast reads 11.7 It's as if the coil is dragging voltage down. It this normal? I did a voltage drop test (from the battery lead on the str solenoid) to the ballast. getting roughly one volt drop and 1.75 when coil plugged in. Should I ditch the Crane coil for a standard can? |
I assume you rewired the alternator ???? re check your work..

Sounds like a wire problem, corroded, weak connection or burnt bulkhead connecters.
You could do a continuity test to case (ground) to be sure but sounds like other stuff. |
Here some reading for you....

The problem is not the coil or ignition. It is bad connections between the batt and ballast
Last resort but it would fix, is to trigger a relay under the hood and use the relay to feed the ignition and regulator Make sure the ground from regulator to batt is ok |
