904 transmission questions

if anyone knows where to find a 904 automatic for my car, i would appreciate it. Ive looked into getting my 904 rebuilt (i know NOTHING about automatic transmissions) and it was going to cost way too much to do. BUT i know that the 904 for 1965 was very unique for that year (1964 with the pushbutton trans, 1965 GT with the floor mounted cable shifter, and 1966 they went away from the cable floor shifter to a more conventional style).

A few questions with regard for that: does the cable linkage from the automatic transmission disconnect so i could either put a more traditional shifter on it, or say, if i were to find a later model 904, i could unhook my transmission's cable linkage and attach it to the newer transmission (so i could use my stock shifter)? For now, i'm going to band-aid the situation i have and replace the front seal on the transmission so i can actually drive it (i miss it), but a rebuild/replacement is very soon in the future.

thanks for reading..
