Need info about 71 dodge demon

Hello everyone! I am new to the forum and have been thinking about owning my first mopar. I don't know too much about them.. I have been into tri 5 chevy cars and 68-72 GM A body cars.

My wife and I are looking into dodge demons and I wanted to ask why some of the speedos are rectangle and why others are in circular pods? Was there some option package that changed the gauges like that? I am trying to figure out as much as I can before I go out and get one. Thanks for any info in advanced :)

the square speedo gauge was the standard gauge put in most Demons. The round gauges were part of the "Ralley Dash" which came in the 340 Demons. I am not sure if they were optional with other engines or packages or if they were only available with the 340.

If you get one with the square cluster, you should get a replacement for it from a Canadian car; if I remember correctly, they read up to 150 (kph, but it looks cool ;) )

I like the '71 better, the bumpers and marker lights are cleaner, and if you get an original 340 car, the '71 model has more power (better cam, heads, etc.) than the later models.

the demon ralley packages are cool but if you can get your hands on a demon in good shape no matter what the dash looks like its a great buy, the demons are one of the rarest late model A bodys only built for 2 years then retired to make way for the DART sport

thanks for the info guys! I figured it had to be some kind of package. I think my wife likes the square cluster better, but I like either one. I am trying to find one with bucket seats, console, and manual tranny... so far nothing in my price range lol. Did the ralley dash some with a tach?

I am not too worried about things being totally original. If it had a 318 I could always put a crate engine in it, and save the 318 incase I wanted it back to stock. I have a 68 GTO convertible that I am parting out, a 56 chevy 4 dr belair project that I am going to sell, and also a 68 olds 442 that I am trying to get running again... then put up for sale. i just want a nice muscle car that I don't have to put a whole lot of work into for once that won't cost me one of my kidneys to buy :).

Yeah in 72 all performace was cut across the board for all makes unfortunately.. but some 72 cars (and even 73 mopars) look cool. I appreciate the help, and I am sure I will have more questions here soon.

another question

I thought of another question. Why do some have hood scoops close together and some have them far apart???

mr340 03-21-2010 06:18 PM

the 71 has 2 separate scoops, '72 has one large scoop with 2 inlets. The round gauges are only available in the '71 340 Demon, all other '71's and '72 only offered the standard cluster. The Rallye dash tach was optional.
the bumpers were the same for both years, only the side markers and grille were changed for '71 as was the trunk lid ( it has a raised body line down the center) engine choices remained the same as far as CID, but the HP ratings were lower in '72.

thanks for the info! that clears things up a bit. I see a lot of 71s with the 72 scoops it seems. Now I need to see if I can find one of these cool cars :D
