Transmission slip or something else?

When i'm in 2nd and 3rd gear if i punch it to quick over 3500rpm it seems to be slipping/ starts chugging along and sputtering. I have a 4 speed from a 73 valiant.

if i give it a gradual acceleration there is no slip.

any ideas?

it spits and sputters? if ur clutch slips the engine will rev high really quick if its a spit sputter u may need plugs wires/ fuel filter carb cleaning.

Those are 2 sprite problems....
What Happens in 1 & 2 ????

TVLynn 08-06-2013 06:43 PM

Sounds more like a carb problem.

Coronet 500 08-06-2013 08:01 PM

I agree about the carb, what carb is it?

To confirm find a place where you can try the same 3500rpm acceleration in each gear and record the results.

1st gear goes up to 5k rpm
2nd starts sputtering at 3300 rpm when i was going up a hill
3rd sputters over 3600rpm
4th sputters right away around 2800rpm

this is a ll when gunning it pretty hard
if i give it a slow gradual it will sputter and catch up and shake a little

Change the fuel filter too....

pro-tech 08-07-2013 06:09 AM

I would do the cap, rotor, and wires with the plugs...Bill

I thinks its running out of fuel....
Fuel filter
Check fuel pressure.
Check fuel flow
Reset Float level

Just my 2 cents

Sounds like fuel starvation to me too. What type of carb? A fuel pump test may be in order too.

Sorry Bob I see you said that too. Dan.

75Duster360 08-07-2013 09:53 PM

thanks again its got an old fuel pump

75Duster360 08-11-2013 07:09 PM

Problem solved changed plugs all except 2 behind headers on driver side. Will get at them when I swap out headers tomorrow. Did notice a little sputtering on hills. What's a good 12v pump?

slade 08-11-2013 07:58 PM

for fuel? theres no need to install a electric pump you can always install a high flow mechanical pump
