1971 roadrunner brakes! question!?
i have a 71 RR and in need of some help or advice. i am putting bigger studs and lugnuts on my drums front and back. the front i have off. but the back i need still. i am trying to get the plate the studs sit in off. i heard you have to take the cap off the back of the differential off and theres two pins you need to take loose and the plat will slide out.. im gonna have the bigger studs compressed in after i get the plate off. , IF ANYONE HAS TAKING THERE STUDS OFF OR BRAKES APART PLEASE HELP ME!

if you are going to press in the new studs I think you might need to use a shop press in which case the axle shaft will have to come out. I believe that their is a c-clip holding the axles in inside of the pumkin and then their are plates on the ends were the drums are. I have never taken my axles out and I don't have a mopar but I have a nova and I rebuilt the brakes all around.
I have also looked at enough catalogs and magazines to see that the axle will have to come out if you want to press it in with a press, I just pulled the axle out a little bit put a good size pipe that would cover the end of the bolt when it was completly compressed and put a c-clamp on it and tightened away. It on my nova and my friends mustang. I hope this helps some.

I'm not sure what all rear ends were supplied in 71. So far as I know, only the 8 1/4 rear, which has a 10 bolt oval shaped rear cover, uses the internal axle "c" washers. If this is the case, drain the rear, remove the rear cover, and remove the bolt holding the crosspin for the pinion gears. Now you can push each axle in to the center, remove the "C" and pull the axle out.
If you DO NOT have this type axle, just remove the 4 bolts that hold the axle retainer and brake backing plate. There should be an adjustment on one side of the car. You may need a "hammer" puller to knock the axles loose
You really need to get yourself a shop manual
