1972 Dodge Charger
So went and put down my down payment on a 72 charger this last tuesday. Pick it up next weekend. The body is in fairly good shape, frames in great shape. I've been able to find most of the interior parts that I need but am more concerned with the motor. I was wondering what exhaust combo's people where doing and motor combo's as well. I'm new to mopar's so don't really know where to go for parts. I've helped built a 66' Mustang and am recentaly helping finish a 650+ hp 75 stingray. This will be my first mopar period. Anyhelp will be appreciated.
Note: 360 motor with 727 tranny. As you can see the car is in some dire need of tlc http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd79/skymynx/078.jpg http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd79/skymynx/077.jpg http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd79/skymynx/083.jpg http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd79/skymynx/076.jpg |
so ill be picking it up this saturday as long as everything goes to plan at the bank. i personally cant wait. anyone know of a good place for carpeting to start.
|
I got a carpet kit from summit racing for my D200 for a good price.
What are your plans for it? Once you can give us an idea about what you want to do with the car, we can tell you where to go and what to look for.:D ...and welcome to the board. |
i could always find what parts i need through summit
but whenever you order, always talk to someone |
just like 78 says there are tons of places we get our stuff from so all we need to know is what your looking for at the time and we will help you

guess you have to call summit, cause when i went on there website it listed only like three things for the whole car when you put in it had a 360 in it.
this season im looking to start restoring the interior right off the bat, while also starting to restore the outside of the car. i have a friend who had worked in a body job for 25+ years who is going to help me do the prep work. he doesnt have the equipment anymore but assures me that is where most of the cost of paint comes from anyways. still unsure of what color im going to paint it, thinking maybe black, or a green of somesorts as far as performance goes just looking to do the exhaust this year and basic tuneup of course. already have pretty much everything i need for the tune up, only need to go pick up some coolant and antifreeze then ill have everything. i've been looking at some headers for the car, but im lost as weather or not they make a bolt up kit for the exhaust. it would be nice, but if there isnt one ill make one at the garage. want a 3" exhaust, headpipe, and will be putting dual exhaust cutouts on it as well |
With summit you can't just type in what you have for a car and go that route. You will have to shop by motor, by car, and by department. There is plenty of knowledge here as well that can help you and guide you as to what to look for and where. Summit Racing a a good first place to look. Also do a search for mopar performance parts on google or something. You'll be suprised as to how many places there are out there.
For instance: Here is a header back exhaust that Summit Racing makes that is 3". It is designed for your car with a 318 though. I would imagine that a set of long tube headers will fit and exit in teh same spot on a 318 as they would with a 360 since its the same block and heads. http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku Best thing That I would do is gather up as much info as posible for what parts are interchangable and go from there. I'm sure that a set of headers that is designed for your car with a 318 will fit your car with a 360. If I'm wrong, then let me know. |
That is a good point, I bought a set of headers from them for my 400 engine in my Cordoba for something like $90, but it didn't have my year on their site for that part. I bought them as it was an amazing deal, and open the box and there is a sheet with the applications in there and only about 1/4 of the apps were on their site.
So go with what you know, and look up by engine or car and find the interchangeability. I have been using them to find parts numbers to buy stuff at my friends shop, as he is cheaper then them (if not he can match some parts prices), but I have a New Yorker engine to put into the Cordoba, so I have a lot of fun finding things. |
thats some great deals on headers, went to the bank today and got the loan
|
so picked the car up yesterday will have more pics. did a full tune up only to find out the fuel pump wasnt doing its job after i put in about 6 gallons of fresh gas. so gotta order one this week
|
you keeping it stock for the time being til you can save up for everything at once?
|
going to get it running this year, bare minimum maintence stuff depending on the compression test i gotta do later this week. then im going to redo the entire interior. that and new rim and tires are on the agenda for this winter. put the car on the lift and gotta say body was in great shape even underneath the car, very happy overall with my purchase
fuel issue: so finish my tune up and try to crank it. nothing happens look at my fuel filter theres no fuel getting to it. so disconnect the fuel filter and no fuel coming out of the fuel pump at all. can anyone else think of any other issue why i would not be getting fuel other then a bad fuel pump also what brand do people recommend |
welcome to the forum, nice looking project. The fuel line may be plugged in the tank, there is a sock that fits on the sending unit, and over time it falls apart, ither it collapses on itself plugging the line or it just falls into pcs. and plugs the line, the first thing to do is blow air back through the line from the front, then try the pump again and see if it primes. if not then id say drop the tank. take the sending unit out. Ive always used carter hi -po- fuel pumps from summit, they never quit , and dont leak.for an exh. tti has nice header applications, and they offer a full system to match. they re alittle more expensive, but, its worth the money.
|
i think i may go with flowtech but im not sure yet. i can get the headers incredibly cheap through a friend thats a holley dealer. ill have to try putting some air through the fuel line. i'm not too familiar with these style fuel pumps, what do you mean when you say prime it?
|
Another thing you may want to look at is whether there is a hole in the fuel line anywhere. If there is, you'll be sucking air thru that hole and it won't draw the fuel from the tank. All the other advice is good as well. Priming the pimp... basically getting some fuel into the line or pump some way. It can be done, but I'm lucky to never have had to do it.

$4900 is a little steep.
|
i only paid $3900 and $4900 isnt that steep around here.
