1977 Chrysler 400 c.i. engine
 

I am looking to sell the engine I will be pulling out of my 1977 Chrysler Cordoba, and am wondering what a fair price to ask for it would be. I plan on selling the 727 trans with it as well.

The odometer says about 117000 miles, not sure if the engine was rebuilt before or not. I am not including the carb or headers as they are going on the new engine. There are aftermarket Moroso valve covers, and an aftermarket intake, I think its a Holley, and I am also including the accessories: AC Comp, power steering, and alternator. I know it needs to be rebuilt by whoever buys it, just wondering what you guys think would be a good price. I can take some pictures and post if that would help.

How about putting it up for "bidding" ? .... cast valve covers? .... what specific intake is it?

I currently have it on Craigslist South Jersey, I was thinking about putting it on eBay but then I would have to deal with shipping it freight.

I will look at it when I get home to answer those questions, and perhaps provide some more details.

How does Craig's list work for selling parts? ..what are you asking for it on there ?

I find that it works ok if you have time, for instance I was selling a Holley 650 with electric choke and Vaccuum secondaries with a Moroso air cleaner and new air filter for $150. I almost sold it numerous times, and had tons of people contacting me, but it took approx 9 months to sell ( I listed it 3 times on there).

I have also sold exhaust manifolds from the 400 engine for $100, they sold quick, but the guy negotiated with me, and drove 2 hours to pick them up, I wanted more though.

Currently I have the engine on Craigslist for $500, listed it yesterday, and I have had 1 person contact me asking for pictures, generally I don't list without pictures, but I will be posting some on there today.

Something I forgot to add to the previous post is the benefit of Craigslist, local pickup, I don't like to mess much with shipping unless I am selling on eBay.

To answer your questions, the Moroso Valve covers appear to be stamped, and the intake is a Holley Street Dominator.

I have heard that C L is full of tire-kickers .. you seem to agree.

Good luck selling it ...and shipping a motor is expensive AND can be a pain.

Thanks, it sure is, whenever I buy from someone I always ask about their experience with the listing. Most of the time they tell me they get people offering ridiculous trades for their items, I haven't really experienced that, but I do have a lot of stuff on there now. I listed all my extra 440 parts that I had put on here in the classified section, and only got one hit on the carb.

Do you think $500 is fair?

500$ ? .... is the motor clean ? ... how about looking into the rocker covers ? .. is it really clean ? .... if so ..it might be .. but most people would consider a motor with over 100k miles on it to need a rebuild. And 500$ is an awful lot of money for a B engine with a cast crank.

I know it needs a rebuild, I just bought a 440 for $750 that also included the trans , and see that people who did the same thing as be have turned around and sold theirs for 4 times the amount.

I figured that the intake runs about $200, I have seen really bad condition blocks go for over 300 on eBay, and I am including the transmission, so I thought I may have been low with my asking price. That was just my thought process for the asking price.

Also I don't know what the mechanic that I bought the car from did to convert it to "high performance", so there may be other changes I am unaware of.

But ...is it really clean on the inside ?

So you know people that have gotten nearly 3k$ for a used bone-stock 440?

To simply "convert" it over to HP ? ... how did he say he did that ?

I am not sure how clean it is, I never pulled the valve covers off the 400.

He really didn't say but before that he mentioned high pro he said something about having the stock 400 and then converting it so that it was high pro, I assumed he made changes that were like what was done to the models with the hp options. From what I have seen without taking it apart is that he converted it from lean burn, put new distributor in, new intake, and carb.
