318 header question (damage)

5 Attachment(s)
Bought this 68 Sat in October. I have been slowly modifying it and came accross some pretty beat up headers. The passanger side is worse than the drivers. Also they seem to be sitting awfully low. You can tell by the road damage. Is this normal? Why is the passenger side so scuffed up and the drivers side fine? Also, is it normal for the steering linkage to sit in-between the headers? Pictures attached

hey 68 sat you have a oil dribble on the floor hehehehe :D looks like some one was going down to many gravel roads .... i would see if there is a number on them and see if they are for that car but i have rarely ever seen a header that fit a mopar right but they do look a little low but it still could be normal

they are so scuffed up on the passenger side, because the engine sits to that side because of the steering linkage
the only way to put them in or remove them in by hitting the engine compartment?
is the paint next to the headers on the driverside engine compartment scratched up?
the headers are supposed to sit next to the steering linkage

hey guys,

There are no scuff marks inside the engine compartment. I want to replace them but I am not knowledgable in steering linkage assembly, and don't want to have the same problem as the last guy.

btw the oil dribble is from my pos 99 volvo..does anyone need a volvo?

the exhaust on my 78 d200 sitts a little low like that too but not the headers. I am thinking that they are for another vehicle of the previous owner installed a motor mount kit that drops the motor a little to lower the center of gravity. That is just a thought though.

Check your driver's side motor mount to see if it's broken/seperated. Could be the engine rising and hitting the headers on the passenger side cause of that.

I believe the headers came from a different car. That is my guess. Hooker Headers here I come.

Apparently its an oil leaker.:D

I've got a FSJ to take care of all my oil leaking wants.

I have a 68 dart that used to be the same way, I smashed mine on that same side on a speed bump, It skrews up your exhaust flow and you loose performance. Hooker used to make a two piece header that is alot easyier to install, and you dont have to take apart your linkage. Also take out your distributer, pull out the engine mount bolts and raise up your engine and the headers will go in alot easyier.

smackhonda,
thanks for the info. This project is on my short list this winter. I'll try your advice.
