383 vs. 440
I know there's no replacement for displacement, but here's my problem; I'm going to an engine swap for my 69 Satellite, now I have a really good deal in a 383 plus the 727 Torque Flight trans for $400, 75k original miles and it still runs. But I really want a 440 instead. I'm not going to be drag racing the car but I do know that down the road the 440 will be more valuable in the vehicle if I ever decided to sell it. Equally built what would be the best way to go if you were building a street rod?

If the engine and trans is such a deal, then you might be best "flipping" it and put the
toward what you really want. I guess the decision comes down to your wallet. Dont think what will make your car more valuable in the future, do what you can enjoy now.

I agree w/ hyper, get the 383, put a cam , intake and carb setup on it and drive the thing for awhile since it already runs, then in time find a 440, build it then just spend a weekend putting the new 440 in . that way your still driving the car.

The 440 is the way to go. Why spend the time and money on a smaller displacement engine when for the same price and time you can have a 440? Have patience, look for a suitable donor car if you can, or just the engine, whatever you prefer and then go for it. You will be much happier in the end. . . i know i am ![Big Grin](https://moparforums.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Sadly no, I dont have any current pics. Just this one of the Charger in the shop after the driveshaft was finished. I ran out of time for the moment. Im out of the country. But I will have more pics soon as I am coming back in June.

I would get a 440 also but, that 383/tranny is a heck of a deal!!!! I like Scotts74 idea - buy it and flip it. Just put a little time into it to clean it up, sell the motor and you can get a 440 and have the tranny for free. What kind of tranny do you have now and what are the plans for after the swap?

Anyways I just bought my Satellite and I have some other work that needs to be done; some wiring, brake conversion, interior work. You know typical stuff. As far as the drive train is concerned I'd like to do the 440 with a performance cam, lifters and hooker headers, a Dana 60 rear-end 3.75 gear ratio. Trying to build a little more of a street rod than a resto. I'll post pics soon

well i ended up finding a running 383 4 Barrel out of a 73 Challenger and I'm getting the 4 speed manual tranny with it for $900 so I guess I'll settle for the 383 but I think I'll be happy with it. I'm just excited that I can convert my car to a manual now.

Well there are some complications with me flippin the engine because it's a favor from a friend of mine obvisously he knows he could sell it for much more, but he's a good guy.

I'm not so sure that down the road your Satellite would be worth more money with a 440 for two reasons; 1. Some Sport Satellites came with 383's even though this engine would not make your's number's matching but none came with 440's. 2. They were way less 383's produced than 440's. Having said this the 440 would be the better performer if performance was your goal but you have stated you would not be drag racing. I, myself, am a huge fan of the 440 but in your case, especially coming across a steal of a deal as you have mentioned, my advice is to go with the 383.
