440 crankcase ventilation
Hello everyone I’m new to the forum .i have a blown 440/500ci that my dipstick keeps lifting and spewing some oil on hard drives or just around the street.I am street driving only I do not race my car ,currently have on each valve cover -12an lines going to two separate catch cans .I collect water and some oil residue from them periodically.I was told that my motor has a slow oil recovery, and my blower makes an ample amount of pressure, and one of the only ways to fix this problem is to tap into the valley wall with a 3/4 fitting and -16an hose going into a high flow catch can ,I really don’t know where to drill ,can anyone shed light on this matter,or have another solution? Thank you

Have you tried the locking style oil dipstick? https://lokar.com/1220264.html
Just a question: Do you know how much boost pressure? and also how much crankcase pressure it is making? My first thought, Getting past " Nature of the beast" is the Piston Ring gap is wrong or the tension is weak? |
Thank you for your reply ,but that was the first thing i thought of too ,but it’s just like putting a bandaid on the problem.im sure if do that the pressure would seep from another spot on the motor, besides my dipstick is not that easy to lift up its kind of tight thank you

Anyways, To answer your question... I would look at increasing the Valve Covers in size or off the back of the china wall or the valley plate if you can get to any of it.
|
I would really like to ease some of that pressure from the lifter valley before it gets to the valve covers .know it’s been done before, this blower makes so much pressure inside the motor 😎👍

But I think ring seal is going to be important in making this work. |
Thank you ,so you are saying I need to replace my piston rings ?
|
Hey brother I really hope you are wrong ,if you are right ,I will tie the dipstick and run my car to its limit .lol
|
You can also try under driving the blower as well, in other words dont spin the blower so fast. Change to a larger Pulley on the blower..That will lower the boost and not cause as much blow by for the piston rings... Unless the rings are shot... But driving the blower slower should help... But at some point you will have to address the issue.

I might go back down that’s definitely an option .How about an electric vacuum pump from one valve cover to a vacuum oil /air separator to one catch can ,and the other side I leave alone what do think about that ? Thank you for staying with me ,I definitely appreciate it 😎👍
|
By the way right now I’m running-12an lines from each valve cover the two separate catch cans
|
A belt driven pump is the way to go, I’ve seen one free up a little over 20 hp on a 500” NA B block.
|
Thank you sir ,i will check it out which one is best for me to mount on my motor .,but into an oil/air vacuum separator can first ?
|
Yes the catch can goes between the valve covers and the pump. If you go this route you will need to watch the oil levels because it will definitely pull it with a vacuum pump.
|
Ok some more info has come across my attention in the few hours ,my catch cans might be mounted too low for my situation, and too small also,so I’m going to do some tests before I get myself crazy .I was ready to pull my motor .i can do venting tests and compression tests before .I will post my finds after that ,once again feedback is definitely appreciated 😎👍

Whoever we really dont know that at this point without actually putting a gauge on valley and noting what the pressure is... Hope that makes scenes? I'm not opposed to the vacuum pump idea, just as long as it can keep up... Meaning::: If your fighting lets say its 5PSI of Crankcase pressure..... If the pump will pull 13" of vacuum.... Then you should be in much better shape for control.... BUT if its got 20PSI of crankcase pressure and the vacuum pump can only pull 8".... It does not help the issue.... :) |
I took the car out today, got on it did about 3 hard burnouts .the dipstick did not move lol .i know i mounted the catch cans way too low below the valve covers .I tried to keep them out of the engine bay .So now i am relocating them to the engine bay as high or higher if possible to the valve covers ,and i will have at least shorter hoses going on them. My car doesn’t smoke even when I get on it ,my buddy is almost always following me to the beach area where we meet on Sundays, and on the way I do a few blasts with it ,it’s pretty hard not too with a roots style blower that a have .So I’m going to see what happens that’s all I can do for now .Im going to put new plugs in it ,and wile they are out I’m going to do a compression test ,and change the oil ,thank you again my friend,Stay well and safe 😎👍

Sounds Fun and like a good plan, and keeping check on the health of your engine.... Have fun and be safe.... Keep us posted how things are going....
Just keep an eye on it, Happy Moparing.... Blower cars are sooooooo Cool.... Cheers |
Yes they are my friend,as I took more stuff apart I’m finding one of lines were so kinked it wasn’t even working lol .i thought I was doing something smart by running the lines and catch cans under the front fender ,but in reality it was the worst move lol .so now I drilled another hole near the top of each can and put a push-In breather to make it even breathe better ,and mounting them in the engine bay as high as the valve covers ,and with shorter hose I’m sure is going to make my girl a lot happier,She definitely has to be a woman with all the heartache She puts me through that’s why I named her Medusa 😎👍💪lol
