70 roadrunner clone
#2
i am not 100% certain, but i believe that the cross member of a slant six car is different...as is the rest of the front suspension to accomodate the added weight. ive never seen a slant 6 runner, though.
as for the pros and cons of the 413 vs the 440. aside from the basic "pro" of the bigger engine, the 440 is a much more commonly modified engine, so parts are more common. Many of the parts, such as the manifolds, headers, heads, etc are interchangable between all of the B/RB blocks. however, some things, like performance pistons for a 413, arent even listed by the major performance manufacturers, like keith black, but everyone who makes mopar stuff, makes pistons for a 440. and when you do find the performance stuff for the 413, they may cost a bit more since they are less common.

he should know, however, that unless hes going for huge power, he can get good power and performance out of the 413. A good set of heads with a valve job, cam, intake, and headers for any RB motor will fit, and give you good performance. I have seen some very fast 413 cars, and if youre going for a unique approachm the 413 would be the way to go.

yes but if he's going for the clone look i don't think too many 70 rr's came with a 413 but the 440 383 and the 426 were the engines available. along with the 318 and slant 6 for the slower crowd. i would definately put the 413 on the back burner for an earlier b body and go for a 440 6 pack for the rr. hey....its just a thought.

ahh...you know, i gave no thought to the "RR clone" idea...my mistake.
you are 100% right..if he wants 1 good clone, he will have to go with a 383, 400, or 440...unless he wants to shell out the for a hemi!
i have to wonder why the 413 even came up? rondogg, do you have the chance at a cheap/free 413? if so, you could simply remove badges on the 413, and throw something like a 383 or 440 pie tin on it. that would be the sort of "budget build"...as i dont think that there are no identifying marks on the engine other than the block stamp, and perhaps the pedestal on the front of the block, but you can smooth that out.

i don't think the 400 was available for the 70 model plymouth but came out in 71. no big deal though because you couldn't tell them apart from a 383 or 440 just by glancing at them anyways. a stroked 400 would be awesome too. all it takes is money right?

i am going to go with the 440. thanks for all the input. the 440 will bolt in, i found out from year one. no crossmember needed. suspension tuning yes.
hey mirada you serious about the slants being fast? thats some serios bragging rights. and no i cant swing a hemi.

do you mean for a slant six, or for a 440?
if you mean for a slant six, there are companies around the country who specialize in slant six mopar performance...one that i know of is called *** racing...and i have seen several slant six cars run in the low 10s and high 9s.

I am thinking of replacing the 318 in my ramcharger with a HT413 that I found in my yard. Is this a huge project as im not sure about the four wheel drive being an issue..im guessing the tranny thats bolted to the 318 is going to have to come out.

no, dont worry about the crossmember, w/e engine you choose, just buy the appropriate swap kit for it, you will need to beef up the suspension and the brakes, i'm restoring my 76 'Feather' Duster, all i need is to borrow a buddys engine lift and yank it out and i'll be on my way to re-building it and probably beefing it up a bit, only has 30k orig. miles, kept in the family...but for your swap kit just go to this place>>>http://www.engine-swaps.com/ or here ManciniRacing

You most certainly CAN, at least in the case of the RB engines, which have the small boss on the passenger side of the engine, near the distributer. These pretty much all had a stamping that ID's the CID, IE 440, 426, 26, 413, etc. The low deck engines did not have this boss.
So far as the cross member, I don't remember, it SEEMS to me that it won't clear the pan
I would CERTAINLY go for a 440 over a 413. Also, there is a lot of difference in brakes, sway bar, and torsion bars betwen even the 383 cars and such things as my old six pack. I wouldn't have one of these nowadays with drum brakes.
