73 Dodge Charger Se spark issues

I have a LOVELY 73 charger 400. Curently I am having issues with no spark. It started out as my alternator went out, I replaced it. Then it was not properly charging my battery which drained that. I replaced the battery and redid all of the wires that had to do with the alternator, starter, battery, and distributor. Now I have no spark. I've replaced the distributor, the cap, the rotor, the ballast resistor, the ignition coil, the ignition control module, the voltage regulator, new spark plug wires and new plugs........ and still I have no spark. The engine turns over and tries to crank but is not getting spark, pulled plug wires and tried to get spark don't see any.......... now I am lost and confused and my beutiful project car is turning into a nightmare any help would be welcomed.

You must not be getting any voltage to the ignition coil. ?

Do you have a wiring diagram ?

ArmyMike77 08-17-2010 08:59 PM

no I don't have a good wiring diagram. thought I was getting voltage it was showing voltage on my voltage meter..... but maybe not enough I pulled the plug wire that runs from the ignition coil to the distributor and it was not shooting spark out of the coil.... maybe I got a bad coil

\thats quite a list of parts you replaced, how are all the grounds?

Here are a couple of diagrams for you:

I've checked all the grounds everything seems good, but will triple check them.......

There is a pickup coil inside the distributor that generates AC voltage that tells the ECM to ground the coil. That must be gapped aroung .008. take off your cap and gap the tabs on the coil. Thats what my problem was in my car.

good call
when you gap your spose to use the brass feeler guages not the stainless steal

ArmyMike77 08-18-2010 11:09 AM

Hate to say it but I already gapped it at .008. Whats the diference between the brass and the stainless steel feeler gauges?

74bbroadrunner 08-18-2010 12:01 PM

The coil uses magnets and if u use a steel one it can reverse the polarity of the magnets. You have to use a brass one because its not magnetic. Put and ohm meter in the wires coming out of the distributor and have someone turn the car over and see if its creating AC voltage.

ok that is a good thing to know never thought of that..... I'll check that out

Turns out the ignition coil was shot. Now I have spark, but it now keeps back fireing through the exhaust still won't start but at least now I have spark

Mike -
OK, now you have a timing issue - that may or may not be easier. Beside initial timing you have to look at what affecting your advance curve (weights/springs and vacuum).
