Carb recommendations

I just bought a 69 Plymouth satellite. It is bone stock with a 318. I am looking to save up for some engine upgrades, and I was looking for some sedgestions as far as carbs. I haven't owned a car without fuel injection, and my school barely touched on the finer points of non FI cars. I am good with mechanical work so I can deal with installation and tuning.

I know I am looking for a four barrel. Kind of choke doesn't matter. Looking for a good power upgrade, without compromising driving on the street. Don't care about mileage as long as it doesn't reduce it.

Welcome Ryan..
Nothing wrong with efi... Holley efi. FiTech. Ect all good stuff....
But if your going old school... I think a Holley 650 on a stock 318 with electric choke will work fine for now. After you do the upgrades you will need to up the CFM of the carb...

Keep us posted on what way you go.... :)

Ryan -

You have to think both short and long term.

For a stock 318, the 650 that Bob suggested + a good dual plane manifold would be as high as I would go. You don't have enough cam and exhaust to handle anything more. Personally, I'd go with a Holley 600 vacuum secondary. That should be well tolerated and allow for some growth in the cam and exhaust departments.

Right now, I'd find out as much as you can about the car. Rebuilds, gearing, etc.

Here I go again, I would go with a 600 dp and a good two plain intake plus a set of headers at the same time. Next would be a good midrange cam and a distributer recurve but I might get the distributer earlier. Good plugs and wires from the the start.
Have fun:)

Gas mileage is going to be determined by your right foot!

This one worked well for me on a 318 with Ed Performer, stock cam and XE 256 H.

Thank you all. I pretty much figured out Im gonna want a 600 cfm Holley. Do I have to get a new intake manifold to hange the carb?

Coronet 500 07-05-2017 05:29 PM

Yes, a 360 cast iron OEM is a fantastic manifold and should be found for cheap.

Don't worry about the port mismatch at this power level.

No no no.
Untill u swap heads...you wont make any serious power.
At least cram the largest valves you can get in the stock heads.
No matter what you do to the upper end your heads will be the choke point.
I highly recomend a set of 360 heads.....! 4bbl stock valves.
On my 318 right now a set of 4bbl 360 heads ported.
Ond man that engine breathes right up to 7000rpm
The air gap manifold had to be opened up to match the heads intake runners.
Comp cams dual energy kit.

Dose it ping when you stand on it?

TVLynn 07-11-2017 08:03 PM

A 360 intake has a spread bore pattern and would need an adapter to run a Holley or any carb except a thermoquad. YOU must also get the correct 4bbl linkage for the carb- trans kickdown linkage. They make a special adapter for the Holley carbs for the correct arch / travel

Holley adapter PN 20-7

No.
she pulls 18in vac at a light cruise, 12-15 at a moderate cruise, 2000-2200
I will admit though that i have spent along time tunning this carb. Ed. 650 avs. Im still tuning the secondaries theres a slight flat spot but no smoke.

I've come to the same conclusion through study, but I'm not sure if I'm going to go with new heads. A lot of extra money when I'm not exactly sure I need to make THAT much extra power. The engine is pretty good stock already just looking for a few boosts. If I'm gonna go all out with new heads and everything I'm definitely gonna go with a hotter carb than a 600, and a cam and intake to match. Just not sure how far I want to take the performance. Just from what I've read though I love the options I have with this motor, like the 340 or 360 heads. They're pricey though.

RyanSweet 07-12-2017 09:42 AM

I'm now wondering about brand. I like edelbrock because you can match parts (a performance rpm carb goes with a performance rpm intake, etc) and it seems like they really do bolt on right out of the box. But it seems like a lot of people like Holley more.

btw, I've been looking for 360 heads online, and all I can seem to find are from the 80's and 90's. will these still work?

Shouldn't be a problem

alright thanks I appreciate it

Ryan -

I'd slow down. If you want a new motor, just buy a crate 360 and be done with it. It might end up being cheaper and you'll get a complete package. If you want to get into hot rodding, then your initial thoughts were correct.

Most people start off slow and do some basic work, and a manifold and carb change is within most people's grasp. Holley or Eddy would be fine - but that's another topic. After you get your hands dirty and feel a modest power increase, then headers might be the next step, and then you can start thinking about cams and heads.

No, you're engine won't be optimal with a simple carb/manifold swap, but it will get you started.

BTW - if you want heads, I have a pair of 1971 340 HP heads, that I ran on my 318 back in the day. I'm sure they'd need a full overhaul. But, I'd still do the carb thing first.

no I completely agree. My full intention is to go incrementaly and stop when I'm happy with the performance. Honestly just a four barrel and a new exhaust will probably do it for me. But I'm just getting as much info as I can so I know what I'm going into. If it goes past theeeS

Keep the stock heads, with the 360 heads you loose some compression

Thats so true you will be stuck running 89 oct at the best
Unless you have em milled.
I forget how much off the bottom some off the sides... need to be done also. I will have to see if i have the old paper work when i had my 360 heads done.that would have the specifics on it.
