Charging issue

I have a1967 belvedere with a318 la motor. I had the car sitting for awhile and of course it was dead when I tried to start it. After a jump it wasn't wasnt charging at all. I put a new alternator battery and voltage regulator on because they were old. When I started it and it fired up I was getting about 14.5 or so amps and thought this was good , but after I ran it for awhile. then let it sit for a couple of days and started it again. Now I am only getting 2.5 or 6 amps at idle but about 14 or so if I rev it. Why did the amps drop down? I put the old voltage regulator on and get the same thing. This was at the battery. The alternator is putting put over 14 when checked there What is the normal amps supposed to be when running at the battery terminals. Check and cleaned off grounds but no change. Thanks for reading.
