Exhaust noise
 

I have 67 r/t with a 440. I had a new 2 1/2" system put on. No end to the problems with it! They put Dyno maxs on first, way to loud. They then put stock mufflers on (so they say). The exaust is still to loud and has a drone to it. They said they could put to small resonators ahead of the h pipe cross over. It might help. Do you have any thoughts on how quiet it down?

Usually that's not the problem. 2 1/2" dual exhaust with an H pipe is going to make some noise. The Dynamax turbo mufflers on my 440 car are quite at idle and then they come alive at higher rpms.

It's a 440, it's going to sound like a 440. You can try the "mild" Flow Masters, but it's still a 440 ;)

Here at the Redneck Garage say if ya can't hear it it ain't worth havin,my cuda is way loud can't wait to hear the 440 charger using the same muffler [magnaflow magnapack] with 2 1/2 pipes.

Do the pipes exit under the car or out the back ? Headers ?? It will always resonate if they exit under the car especially with headers... I had Coronet
w/ 2 1/2" flow masters- exit all the way back on a 360. two chamber were too loud 3 chamber sounded good without being annoying

Recently piped a very healthy motor for a buddy who wanted a stealth sound. A almost stock sound. With big headers and pipes it was tough, but..

we had magnaflow small case ones up front directly after the x pipe and then joined turbo style ones dirrectly after the magnaflow. We tried flowmaster 50 series suv and they droaned.

Yes, it had 4 mufflers.. However, dynomax have zero restriction. Sound control only. Basically a resonator. It worked and it sounded killer on the loud pedal.

If that hand not worked we were going with a walker truck / suv large case turbo.

There was a shootout one of the mags did way back in the day on the dyno with dba meter and the walker lost 2 hp on the motor compared to the others but was very very quiet. Ive used it before and it did as described. I may have the part number around the shop if you go that route..

I was running headers and 21/2 pipes all the way back with Summit mufflers. They were louder than I wanted. A bad ignition switch split both mufflers. For economic reasons, I went with Thrush Welded. They were only $38 each. I think they sound better than the Summit brand. Loud on acceleration and tollerable at steady RPM. Eastwood Thermo/Coustic mat under the carpet makes a difference too.

i'm running a glass pack on my car. sounds reaally good but it is only a slant . had a 79 camaro with headers and 2 short glass packs and eco chambers. way too laound and realy bad drone so i put in a strereo with louder speakers.

I'd like to know what the OP defines as "too loud." I remember WELL the "just right" sound of the FACTORY STOCK 383/440 mopars in the 66-70 era.

I owned a 69 383 RR which I later put headers on, with otherwise all -factory exhaust

I LATER owned a 70 440 sixpack RR which I drove and "heard" when it was factory original.

BOTH these cars had the typical Mopar exhaust ---head pipes with an H pipe, nice big mufflers tucked up near the rear axle, and tailpipes out the back.

They had "some" sound in the car, certainly not objectionable, but not "limousine" or "hearse" "quality" either

In my opinion YOU CAN NOT and NEVER WILL beat the factory stock high performance Mopar mufflers used on the big block factory muscle cars. See if Walker has 'em

I don't find this part # readily available, but maybe it will give you a starting point.

Interesting point. I'm still running Walker "HEMI" mufflers on the Charger. Don't want to mention how old they are, but still work.

Not sure how efficient they are, flow wise, compared to the aftermarket "high tech" stuff, but really didn't matter. because we dropped the pipes at the track.

I am still trying to find the anserw to my exhaust drone. Last summer I was at a car meet and there was a 67 R/t like mine. He started it up and
had stock mufflers. It sounded great, just a nice rumble. Has any one
found any thing like the stock mufflers?

Walker makes a muffler that is as close to OEM as it gets. I had a 70 superbee that had stock exhaust and it was loud too I think it is the nature of the beast. Dont forget your dealing with alot higher compression in the older cars then what we have now. LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES... lol

i run turbo mufflers on my ride they are from dyna max i believe i have had them for over 15 yrs they sound deep and throaty.

Call the guys at Accurate Exhaust, they should be able to help.

Good old sonic turbos is what you need.. Remeber thats what was used before flowmaster.. Just put some on a work truck with a 390,, quiet with some tone. No roar, or mega-phone sound. I like some stuff loud and some quiet. Cant stand the sound of a flowmaster any more.

i agree allot of these mufflers sound like a bunch of gravel rattling around
especially the cat back systems
i love the sound of my turbo's deep throaty tone.

I remember when flowmasters, first came out. I saved my money for 3 months to get my mufflers changed.. I think what kills the flowmaster sound for me now is all the people that put them on late model stock engines, such as pickups and suvs... Cant stand that sound,, if it dont bump leave it stock..

Mount your mufflers as far rearward as possible. Also you can try Flowmasters 50,60 or 70 series mufflers. Any dual system will be louder than a single.

My 69RR had blown stock mufflers on it, and original ex system all the way to the oval tips!. So I installed 2 factory replacement mufflers from Advance auto parts, and it sounds just like the original ones. And just had to do a little hack saw work, install a couple of slip connectors, and it was a bolt together! Works great!

I am thinking of putting a pair of walker quiet flows on it. Will they be quiet as OE?

I'm showing Walker 18230 as OE replacement muffler for the 440 Engine in 1967.
