Hey zeek, yes you can put the 361 heads on a 440. they will work, But why would you want too? The 361was used through 67. then they made a better casting head in 68. The pre-68 heads are a closed chamber design. meaning the wuench area od the head is smaller then the post 67 which are open chambered heads. the pre 67`s are also smaller valved then the open heads, thus they dont flow as good. You can put bigger valves and do some port work on the pre67`s but thast alot of money wasted when you can do half the work on post 67`s and get more for your money. the only bonus you really get using the post 67`s if you do the machine work. is that they give you like 1 more point of compression. like a pre 67 head would be 10-1on comp. vs. an open would be 9-1, thats because you have more quench area at the top of the head. and if your planning on running pump gas you dont want anything morethen 10-1. the gas is low grade and you`ll get ignition ping real bad, when you nail it and it knocks and blos black smoke real bad. I have a 10.5-1 440 in my runner and I have to run 7 gal of race gas 114 octane and the rest 94 or it wont run. it rattles really bad. just something to consider.
