just got me a 73 satellite for a trade for my compact .45 ,it has a 318 in it. it was supposed to run. got it home and just turns over with fuel spewing out the top of the 1bbl carb so np , i just put a 4bbl intake and carb in it and still nothing but i noticed it wasnt gettin any fuel , put new pump in it and nothing just spins over, gets fuel , spark , air checked timing it 180" out put it back and nothing still just turns over. i think it might be the starter cause i put a new battery in it and it seems like it isnt turning over real fast any help would be great and i thought u would like to what a got 4 a trade.

67 GTX 01-11-2009 07:04 PM

have you checked the distributor or the spark plug wires?

66sportfury 01-11-2009 10:11 PM

i dont think its your starter chrysler starters are a 4.1 gear reduction so they do turn slower than most. i.e gm and ford. 1bbl on a 318? never seen that but okay. have you tried to primer the motor to see if it would start? maybe the carb is gummed up from setting.=+)

78D200 01-12-2009 04:01 AM

welcome to the forum first off!

Have you checked to make sure that you have compression? can you smell/see gas in the carb?

66 - I had a single barrel carb on my 78 d200 with a 318. dodge did make them but I will never understand why.

Polaradude 01-12-2009 05:45 AM

Did you do a compression test ?

devilkin4 01-12-2009 12:50 PM

checked and hasgood compression all on cyclinders , i replaced the carb and intake with a 4bbl and a 600cfm so it gets gas(seen and smelled) and ive replaced cap, rotor, wires and plugs even put a msd coil also. gots real good blue spark and still just turns over. thats why i was thinking it might be a starter issue and i have to take the headers off to get the starter out.

O yea what years by chance is a replacement mini starter. from what ive read on the net its like a dakota v6 and v8 from 89 - ??

67 GTX 01-12-2009 01:00 PM

make sure you have an oil with zinc in it
try to pour some gas down the carb

devilkin4 01-12-2009 01:42 PM

using kendall 10w30 and tried with starting fluid down the carb and it sputted but didnt catch

67 GTX 01-12-2009 01:48 PM

how long did you crank for?

67 GTX 01-12-2009 01:53 PM

crank the engine by hand to top dead center, and make sure the distibutor is pointing to the number one cylinder

Polaradude 01-12-2009 04:51 PM

Ya, check timing fer sure

devilkin4 01-16-2009 10:34 PM

timing was right ended up pulling the starter out wasnt 2 hard after i got the header off it was bad so i bought a starter from a 91 dodge dakota v6 (mini starter and only 7lbs) cost me $60 from advance with lifetime warranty. didnt even have to change any kind of wiring. just make sure you hook the wires up b4 you bolt it on. i have a commerical discount at advance it normaly costs 83.49 plus tax and advanced took the old big starter as a core. put the new starter in and it fired right up. now 2 fix up the rest of the car.

well today was a sad day for my car on my way to the shop it died. walked to the shop and grabbed the tow truck and picked here up and brought here back took valve cover off looked a little dry i knew the oil pump was going bad so i got me a new hv pump. put the car up and started to remove oil drain plug and whats this i see but bright green fluid!!! it poured for like a while then the oil started to drain out and then a mixture off the 2 fluids. ok well i guess i have a blown head gasket. looks like i might as well just rebuilt it a not have to worry about anything else and gives me a good enough reason to clean up and paint the engine bay. it atleast gives me something to do at the shop for now.

67 GTX 01-21-2009 07:27 PM

good luck with the rebuild

66sportfury 01-21-2009 09:49 PM

congrats on getting it started. but chryslers starters do crank slow they have there own sound thats for sure. bummer on the anti-freeze in the oil.

challenger 01-22-2009 03:36 PM

Boy you got a great find in my book and hope that you can get it going before to long , keep us updated on how the build goes and if you have any problems

devilkin4 01-30-2009 07:59 PM

update on motor build so far.
had the block cleaned and bored .30 over new cam bearings and brass freezes plugs put in. I went thru the shop and used the discount threw the machine shop we always use cost 207

bought a set of Keith Black pistons kb167 and moly rings from wheeler performance for 298

Now a Q about the crank should i just spend the 290 on a eagle 340 4" crank or should i have the 318 one redone? i know the 318 is 3.90" does the .1" make that big of difference? i want to try to do one of the 400hp builds like ive seen in some of the mags any help on this would be great

66sportfury 01-30-2009 09:08 PM

im unclear to what you are asking? the stroke of a 318 is the same as a 340 and that is a 3.31 stroke which yours is a cast crank. stock 318 bore is 3.91 stock bore of 340 is 4.04

Polaradude 01-31-2009 02:38 AM

See if you can return the KBlacks, let them break in someone else's motor.

67 GTX 01-31-2009 08:14 AM

ya, i wouldnt trust KB pistons
too many people have said that their breaking

devilkin4 01-31-2009 08:47 AM

so what pistons so i go with then?

heres what im taking about for the crank from eagle.

434033106123 3.310" forged 4340 2050 273, 318, 340 mains or should i go with

434040006123 4.000" forged 4340 2050 273, 318, 340 main

Commando 01-31-2009 01:16 PM

I used speed pro for my build, you may also know them as sealed power or trw.

Polaradude 01-31-2009 03:06 PM

Listen to Commando, those in my opinion also are the slugs to use.(forged)

devilkin4 02-01-2009 08:32 PM

did some looking and refound this place here in florida that i bought some pistons from a long long time ago when i rebuilt my 283 for my tbucket that i have prices are great and forged for the same price guess off i go 2morow and return the KB

update got the KB returned got my machine shop to price match the online price for pistons. getting rods redone now with arp bolts, was going to get crank redone, but they had a redone forged 340 crank/bearings on the counter for 145 so i bought that. so within a few days ill have my motor buttoned up and balanced. then to the cam choice (any help) and then to figure on what heads to get

67 GTX 02-02-2009 09:57 AM

safest bet with mopars for cams are edelbrock or purple cams
what kind of power are you looking for?
what kind of rear end do you have?

devilkin4 02-02-2009 10:43 AM

was trying to get like 350-380whp but i want to be able to drive around the street

rear is a 8 3/4 and i was prob goin to run like 3.73 or 4.10 gears

devilkin4 02-02-2009 01:37 PM

this was the one i was thinking of getting 312-P4452761 Purple Shaft Cam & Lifter KitAdv. Duration: .268°/272°Dur. @ .050'': 228°/231°Lift: .450''/.455''Centerline: 110°Basic RPM: 1500-5800 RPM

67 GTX 02-02-2009 02:15 PM

make sure the cam you choose fits the rpm your gonna run in
im not to good with cam statistics, but im sure someone else here is
