manual transmissions ?
later this week im going to be looking for a manual transmission to put into my 73 roadrunner and i wana be sure i get the right transmission to fit the engine.
i rebuilt a 63' 383 i was wondering what manual transmissions will fit the block I'm probably gona go to pick your part and find one off a van with a big block engine but is there any thing i should know before i just take any old manual trans off a car i want to do as little modding as possible |
A-833 four speed manual. Check to make sure you get a big block bellhousing.
|
is there anything else im going to need besides a clutch because im wanting to put this into a car that is currently automatic
|
Shifter, steering column if you don't want the auto shifter, but the vans won't work....make sure the yoke on the trans fits your driveshaft

not sure about the 23 |
Will his motors crank be drilled for a pilot bearing? You WILL need a pilot bearing/bushing for a manual.
|
need the right crank/or drill the crank, 18 or 23 will work,, BB bell housing clutch pedal, Zbar linkage
and im sure im missing somthing bb |

you can try Brewers for 4 speed parts if you're having a hard time locating them locally.
|
so i need to modify the crank shaft in order to put in the manual trans?
because orignally i thought all you had to do was remove the flex plate and bolt on a flywheel then clutch and then the transmissions |
you need a pilot bushing - most cranks are drilled and machined the correct size, some are just drilled and not machined and a few have nothing. mopar has a roller bearing that fits in the larger machined crank register. if yours isn't drilled at all you will have to saw a little bit off the input shaft
|
ok so i started looking around for the bearing for the crank shaft online and im unable to find one for the engine, is there another engine that uses the same crank or am i gonna need to special order a bearing or bushing
|
Make sure the clutch you buy matches the number of splines on the trans you buy.
|
I recommend (as above) looking at the Brewer's site or calling them. Nobody knows more or has more parts. You can get either a 23 or 18 spline. You need a big block bellhousing but it needs to match the pilot bearing diameter of the 23 or 18 spline trans. You will need a flywheel. Obviously your clutch will need to match the 18 or 23 spline shaft. You will need a trans with the right tailshaft (long tail shaft) with the correct shifter pad (front for B-body) for your car. You will need a 4spd floor hump. Brewers has everything you need.
