New guy, with a question, heater core?
Hey guys!
New here, so I'll introduce myself before asking questions! I'm new to Mopar, but not new to old cars, I have a 58 Triumph TR-3 and a 72 MGB-GT, and recently parted company with a 46 Ford 1 Ton. Been toying with this stuff for 20 years and figured it was time to find a Mopar. So I picked up my first Mopar, a 64 Sport Fury, about six months ago just before winter, and just started working on her. She is a solid car, had a restro done in 2000, then sat for 7 years due to a divorce. She's got a 383 in her now but has the original 426 on a engine stand needing work. The only issue on getting her running besides dried out seals and the need to change all the fluids is a bypassed heater core which leads to think it was bypassed for a reason, so I need to remove the heater core to test it, but I can't find anything in the manuals I have on how to do it, nor can I find anything by using the search function on the forum! I have a sinking feeling I need to remove the most of the dash in order to get to the core, as I can't see a simple way of doing it, unless I'm missing something! I was hoping it would be a easy job! Can someone shed some light on how to do this? Thanks in Advance Mike B |
Hmm i have never done that before, Sounds like its bout time you got yourself into a mopar ;)
I would also guess tearing into the dash is the best way to go about it. Its really not THAT much work. just keep track of the screws and ull be fine. |
If it's anything like my 66 coronet, I just did that a few months ago. Mine was bypassed b/c it leaked (my car has no carpet now!)
Does your car have the big black unit under the dash? If so, there are 4 screws in the firewall to remove it, it's fairly simple. 2 bolts on each side of the firewall. Remove those and pull it out, no need to remove the dash, there are a few cables you will need to detach too, to completely pull it out of the car, I only removed one and pulled half of it out to work on it. There are also 2 vent hoses that need to be removed, if you have a long screwdriver, flashlight and can climb under your dash, you're good to go! lol Once you get the heating unit out, about 8 or 10 small screws hold a plate on that houses the heater core, then 4 screws holding the heater core in place. The hardest part is getting the heater lined up and back in (I tied yarn to the bolts and put it through the prospective holes and pulled it through that way LOL). Good luck with that, hope it helps. |
Well that describes it to a tee. Knowing now that the entire box must come out makes things a bit esayer, i was trying to figure out a way to remove the core while the box bas still in the car.
I'll give it another shot on the weekend, and let you know how it goes! Thanks! |
good luck on that unless you want to cut the firewall!! the plate that covers the housing for the heater core is against the firewall! lol
|
I'm going to try to get the box loose and half slide it out, so I can work on it without disconecting most of the hoses like you discribed. This heater setup looks way to complicated for what it does! lol! Guess I'm spoilt working on all those little british cars, but at least I have plenty of room to work in under the dash of the Fury!!
Thanks again for youre help! |
where are you? I could help if you are close LOL
|
I'm only 5432Km west of you in Edmonton, that is if the East Bay you have down as a location is the same East Bay I know of in Cape Breton, I grew up in Coxheath BTW! :)
|
Edmonton? LOL
East Bay, California is where i'm at. I'm not sure of my surrounding cities, i've only been here a few years. |
Hahaha! East Bay California is 1700 Miles south of me! Sorry Wrong East Bay! :)
I'm in Edmonton, Alberta. Canada the place where all the cold weather comes from! :) |
haha! keep your cold weather!!!!
i like mine warm and sunny LOL it's been so rainy, foggy, cold and windy here lately ... i'm ready for spring! |
Sweet! I got eh box totaly out, took about an hour! I've got the box on my workbench in the house and will remove the core later this weekend and take it to a rad shop on Monday! With some luck next weekend I'll be putting it back in! Then I sit down and wait for the snow to go!
|
oh. you can get a new heater core for about $20, +/- a few bucks, from the local parts store. Is a recore cheaper than that?
|
Sadly I can't find a core for a 64', I can find tons of stuff for 65' and up, but no such luck for the 62's to 64's.
|
awe, that sucks. I had that problem with my radiator. Check e-bay. lol
The radiator for my 66 was going to be $900 new and $400 for a recore... a buddy of mine found one on e-bay for $150 and hooked me up! It was a very nice surprise in the midst of not being able to find any stock parts locally or in magazines. lol |
It's fun owing a 64' when all the after market parts places (year one etc!) only do parts for 66' on.
But a recore should be about $80 - $100 for a decent job that will last another 40 years, since I have no wish to ever remove that heater box ever, ever, ever again! I'll also get the heater valve rebuilt at the same time. Spring is how many months away? The offending box http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...240_9_full.jpg |
ohhh.. mine was much bigger LOL it spanned the whole underside of the dash! and was a pain in my butt before i finally figured it out LOL
good idea, i hope i don't have to fight with mine anymore either. I've had to take it out twice now because my first attempt left me with some strange noise every time i turned the heat on LOL |
