Newbie 71 gtx owner no start

It has been awhile since I have owned a Mopar. So yesterday my car would not fire, but one of the ignition modules oozed it's contents down the firewall. The battery is new, but when I pulled the coil wire to check for spark, nothing. Are the modules problematic and a good place to start? Thanks in advance.

What "module"? If you have an electronic ignition, you should have a control box, voltage regulator and ballast resistor on the firewall. Never heard of any of those "oozing", but if one is, replace it.

Most likely cause is a blown ballast resistor (while porcelain rectangle with wires on each end) , but there's nothing in that to "ooze".

My mechanic told me once to always carry a spare ballast resistor for these old Mopars in the glove box.

Lots of discussion around the www about modern Mopar ECU's "oozing." Evidently late production ignition modules are ----- suffering the same fate as all Chineseo made electronics

Did you leave the key on? Is it wired correctly? How long has/ did it run correctly?

The interesting thing is everyone seems to jump on the ballast, but a bad ballast won't cause "oozing." It is, however, a good idea to keep a spare ballast.

I'd say replace the module, buy a spare ballast, and post back DO NOT leave the key in "run" without the engine running.

When looking at the engine the box on the left of the firewall, it has a single plug with a small screw, that is the box that is leaking. It just stopped running on the highway. There was no indication, it just died. Sorry for being vague, but have not had a Mopar for awhile and forgot about the ballast resistor. Thanks for the help, on my way to the parts store.

See if this helps. The Ignition control box is avaliable from Mopar and after market companies. The orange box in the picture is over 30 years old and still a decent, no frills, street / strip box.

The module could be bad, or the balast. Maybe I was lucky. When my mopars have lost the spark it was traced to the pickup in the distributor, although I had an intermittant wiring problem with a 79 Van so I put in an MSD ign

Thanks to everyone for the response, it was the ballast resistor. Brought back memories of 71 fury. Were these origanally equipped with points? I went to get a rotor for it and saw the electronic ignition. Runs fine now. Thanks again.
