What is correct TorqueFlite transmission fluid for 64 Ply Belvedere 318

Just purchased this vehicle (all orig daily driver) and want to be sure I'm going to use correct fluid. Always remember 'Type A'. Is current replacement Dexron/Mercon (progressive upgrade from Dexron, Dex II, III, addition of Mercon etc) correct for today.

Yes, Dextron III is what they call for now it has better lubricating factors then the old fluid... Bill

I just changed my fluid in my 727 and Dex/Merc was recommended by service guy
at Chrysler dealership. Evidently it foams less, lubricates the moving parts better
and provides firmer shifts to keep the bands from glazing prematurely. Really, I
don't think conventional fluids make much difference but to be on the safe side,
ask a tranny place what they recommend.

There is NO Dextron III, Replacement ATF+4

in the late 60s early 70s we did use type-F in torqueflites. but today i would only use ATF+4. minor history note: i was working a Case MFG in Wichita KS and engineering came out and said that type F could be used in the hydraulic systems. worked good in cold weather. my dad bought a Case garden tractor in 1975, 446 , 2 cyl engine. hyd system was sluggish when plowing snow. switch to type F fixed the trouble. its still in the 446. but today i think i would run AFT+4

Correct Trans Fluid

Thanks to all. Have bottle of Castrol DexonIII/Mercon in front of me as I type. However just an FYI, was on OReilly Auto website under Fluids
&Chemicals > Transmission > found 'Type A' trans fluid - 'Pure Guard' brand (?) avail as a non-stock item avail in 24 hr item. Go figure. Not sure I m ready to jump at that.

Moe... you should have used AW68 in that system.. Not Kansas crude oil...lol

Some of that I just don't trust.... Pro Line oil was one that said it covered everything, "I just slowly put it back on the shelf and backed away" I to went with the Castrol....lol
