Wire on DC amp meter getting hot!

I saw a wisp of smoke so I pulled over. Turned car off and looked for possible cause of smoke. The red and black wires on the back of the DC amp meter were very warm. Started car up and monitored wires and sure enough they began to heat up......traced them out with no obvious cause?

its either shorted out some where or wires are broke inside the jacket causing resistance and heating the wire, maybe the guage is faulty.

I know on 69 Darts the amp wires get hot and melt and can cause an electrical fire. Have to replace them usually.

Happened when we bought a 69 swinger and i drove it home... almost burned it down cause of that.
