1966 Monaco Electrical
Hi everyone I have a 1966 Monaco with a 383 2bbl. i got it off my cousin and they screwed up the electrical they did something stupid that ended up melting the fuse box so i replaced it just like i took it apart. but now one brake light work driver side the blinkers are blinking the diagonal from each other and the dash lights don't work. had this guy look at it and he got the brake lights fixed but then after like two weeks it messes up again took back same thing fixed two weeks later broke. anyone have any idea i want to get it fixed thanks.

Welcome to the forums, how's your level of electrical knowledge ? It sounds like you have a lot of tracing to do. Maybe it's only a couple of bad connections though. We'll help if we can.

thanks for the welcome glad i found this place. i have recently gone though schooling for cars which would be UTI one of the top in my class and have advanced training in volkswagen. i know a decent amount but no one knows everything. i figured that i'm going to need to do some tracing but i don't know where to start and i can't find a wiring diagram for this car. one of my teachers said that the turn signal switch is where a lot of the wires for the brake lights are and i'm thinking that when my cousin melted the fuse box that it might have got melted to.

You guys rock i got the pictures from your secret site printed them now any ideas where i should start.
Start by very accuratley describing what was done and what works, what doesnt and whats acting weird. Guages, ashtray light, inst. lights, domes?
well my cousin did something not sure but it involved him connecting the headlights to the battery directly which ended up melting the fuse box. My dad replaced the fuse box. the problem is my driver side brake light works but the passenger side does not. the blinkers goes left front and right rear and right front and left rear. one back up light does not work but i think thats a bad bulb. the dash lights use to work but now don't same with the transmission light indicator in the console. sometimes the headlights won't work but if you play with the high beam switch they will come on. and the horn don't work. but the park lights work fine.I think thats it any ideas. if any more questions i ll try to answer them. but i'm thinking its the Direction signal switch got fired too.

K, start with the turn sigs. Say you put the LEFT blinker on, does it go left front and right rear, or right front and left rear?
welcome to the forum

sorry guys my battery is dead right now got to wait a couple of days to get the money for new one. been trying all day to get the battery charged and it won't take it has two dead cells. But if there is anything i can do now until i get the new battery or should i just wait some more.
Well ya could leave the batt in the car on a trickle charge and do testing.
it won't blow up the battery?
It shouldn't hurt anything on a trickle, do your checks and then un hook it.
Safety first though, if the sides of the batt are getting warm on a trickle charge which it shouldn't, stop. Keep us posted. |
Ok You got I'll give it a try it shouldn't take long any ways. thanks you guys rock.
ok guys here the findings blinker switch in left: rear blinks front does not. Blinker switch in right position: both blink. Parks on: all lights light. Brake pedal pushed: driver side only, all bulbs in passenger side are good. Battery can't put enough power for headlights. Any ideas? thanks
the flasher may not work if the battery voltage is low or it may flash one suide and not the other.
check to see if power is getting to that front left socket and also check the ground there. if you have a left rear brake light, trace that wire over to the right side. your problem is between the left tail light to the right bulb. i forget if the right lamp piggybacks off the left side or slits at the trunk connector so you might have to check there too. |
Found the problem it was the directional turn switch the contacts aren't making connection for the passenger brake light. I jumped it and pushed the brake and it worked!!! But now I need a new directional turn switch and Autozone napa don't have it any ideas where to get one? Thanks

Ok all the brake lights come on sort of the driver side outer one is bright and the rest or them are super dull. if you hold the brake on for a while the bulbs get a little brighter.
Sounds like a bad ground or connection, go from the bright one to the other side and look for a bad connection etc. Gettin there.:D
Po-daddy is right . Thats the #1 clue to a bad ground.
