1969 sport fury idle problem
 

i cant get my 69 sport fury to idle its got a 383 with 2bbl i know its out of tune but i cant even get it to run long enough to tune it im assuming it just needs more gas to maintain idle but im unsure which screws are for tuning and whats for idle and what not? o ya! its a carter carburetor

How's the timing ?

well theres a screw that is next to the throttle linkage that if you look you can see where it hold the throttle from closing all the way if you twist it to tighten it will increase idle. the idle mixture screws are under the float in front of the motor and there are two of those if you can stabilize the motor then turn them in until you hear the motor start to die then back them out about a turn and half.

Old timers saying, "most carb problems are in the distributor!" Get your basics covered first before you start knob-dicking with the carb.

thanks okay i got it to idle okay now but when i shift it to drive it gets real pissy and 7 out of 10 times well kill

#1 Basic tune up [wires, plugs cap etc].Make sure your'e good there.
#2 Vacuum leaks. Temporarily plug any vacuum lines [brake booster, vacuum adv etc] and then start it up. See if it makes a difference. {you may have a bad brake booster } (make sure your vacuum hoses are in good shape too)

okay so yesterday i meessed with tunning and got it to run and idle on its own now today kit wont idle at all it sounds like its not getting enough gas

have you adjusted the carb yet?

This might be a bit dangerous but here goes. Disconnectr the fuel line from the fuel pump (the one that goes to the carburetor). Buy a piece of rubber fuel line same size as what came off, about 5-6 foot long. Attach it to the place where you removed the original from the fuell pump. (USE A HOSE CLAMP). Find an old plastic bottle like a gatorade bottle. Run the fuel line over the fender and into the plastic bottle. Pull the coil wire from the distributor cap and have an assistant turn over the engine with the key while you watch the flow of gas going into the bottle. Make sure he knows the signal as to when to stop the engine cranking (like a thumbs up for crank and a thumbs down for stop). Good flow of fuel gushing out, the fuel pump is probably ok. None or a trickle, fuel pump might be bad or U might have some type of blockage in the fuel line somewhere. Its very possible you may have enough crud in the fuel tank that it is blocking the suction pickup some what and overnight it settles to the bottom of the tank.
BE VERY CAREFUL DOING THIS CHECK. TAKE ALL SAFTEY PRECAUTIONS.
HAVE AN ASSISTANT AND A WATCHER AND FIRE EXTINGUISHER AND DO THIS OUTSIDE IF POSSIBLE.

OPTION 2: Buy an inline fuel pressure gauge and install it near the carburetor. Pressure should be between 4.5 to 6.5.
