440 Swap on my '68 Fury
 
I have a lead on a used 440 and 727 from the late 70's. My Fury has a 318 at present.

Could someone provide details on the differences between the frame mounts for the 440 vs. for the 318?

If I go forward with this I would have to cut out the old 318 mounts and weld in new 440 mounts.

i have considered and reconsidered doing this in the past. for now, i'm rebuilding the 318 but maybe, just maybe, there will be a big block sitting in my '68 sometime in the future.

any pics of the car? :)

just general info i have found over the years. oil pan: must be made for the body and frame and crossmember. exhaust manafold: must fit the engine and body. sometimes a different year might fit a different year. intake manifold: MOST swaps are not trouble. except: a 413 long ram from a 1964 300. will NOT fit a 1965 300. the manifold will hit the inner finder. motor mounts: REALY NEEDS research. any swap needs a lot of research

Swaps are always a lot of work. I would guess your probably looking at purchasing new manifolds or headers, cross member, quite possibly doing something with steering and modifying/changing/fabricating new motor mounts.

Do your research and then do some more. I would build a spread sheet of what is cross compatable for parts list between the 318 and 440 fury as a starting point.

Good comments. The only pic I have on here is the profile pic. Click on it and you can see the car better. That is from '88 or so.

The 440 was available back in '68. I can get motor mounts that will make it fit. I plan on running TTI exahust headers for a C-body. They clear the p/s box and the torsion bars. I have the 318 radiator (rounded top) but plan on going with an aluminum unit. The 440 I plan on buying has the alternator, p/s pump and ac compressor. I am getting the 727 at the same time.

Keep in mind the '68 Fury engine bay is cavernous. I used to sit on the fender well when working on the points.

I was planning on stroking my 318 to 392ci. It would be fun but I may not be satisfied when it is all done. After some thought though I really want to go the 440 route. I will need that kind of power and torque to heft around that full size Fury.

I wouldn’t discount that 318 just yet. yes, a 440 brings a hefty bit of power, but that 5.2 can be built pretty cheaply to really move that Fury.

With a cam, a 4bbl carb, headers, and light head work that 318 won’t have any issues pumping out 300hp, probably 330 or more, which is plenty to motor that c body down the road.

Thanks Skwerly. I agree. I planned to do all those things. My 318 has 265,000 miles on it and at some point the engine saw a lot of heat. The machinist told me that the main bearings were rough due to oil starvation. Same for the crank. The main caps were warped and they moved freely in the registers. He said the saddles for the main in the block were black from the heat. This is a two bolt main engine. The ribs supporting the crank are thin and would not support new four bolt caps.

Plus I can get a used 440 for around $500. I'm going to go down that route for now.
