69 Fury Upgrades

Hey guys, I just purchased my fist old car. Got a 69 Fury III. Everything is running fine but looking to do a little performance upgrades. Since its only a 318 I am not finding a lot of ideas. Anyone know a few things???

What are your plans for the car?
Daily driver, drag car, cruiser w/ power?

I am just looking to make it a nice cruiser but add some power to it. So far I just started out by buying a new edlebrock carb and edlebrock performer manifold. Looking to do some work to the top but just unsure what all would be worth it for weekend cruiser.

I just looked at the pics: love the side pic.
Do you know what rear end the car has and what ratio is in it?
Is the engine stock right now?

Its 8 3/4, not sure what ratio it is. Im running checks on everything still trying to find out. I just got it about a week ago.

Nice looking Fury and welcome to the forum!
Those wheels look pretty good but, if you pulled them and painted the drums a satin black, they'll look even better! Good luck! Rick

To check the ratio, put the car in neutral, jack the car up till the rear tires are off the ground. Do one complete revolution of the tire and count how many times the driveshaft turned.

Do you have a sure-grip unit?

Yep this will give you the answer. You might want to try looking at the front of the rear pumpkin. There was once a tag there that gave the ratio. might still be there. Probably 2:76 or 3:23. Most likely it has an open rear, non sure grip. Anything can and did come on these though. The 318 has tons of after market parts. First up is a complete tune up so you know it's condition. Older motors can be tired and nothing is going to make much difference. Some times a good tune can realy wake up a motor. If everything checks out, I would go with dual exhaust. You will be hard pressed to get headers in any C-body but a good dual system on stock logs will help. Next would be 4 barrel carb and a mopar electric ingnition would help alot. These are heavy cars and the best way to make em fast is to go big block, i.e. 440. You might find a good deal on a 360 and that will just need a c-body oil pan and all the 318 parts after that will work. Nice car have fun.

Well I looked at a 440 to rebuild. But if I went that route wouldnt I have a lot of tranny work to do to match it up?

Big motor won't bolt up to small motor transmission. Here is a good read.

Thanks for the article. I will probably stick with my 318 and tune it up to 340. I dont have a huge budget for motor. Only about 3000$.

Hey guys, Im thinking about do a port and polish jobs on the heads. How long with it take a 318?

Skwerly 08-02-2011 02:54 PM

i'm doing the same thing with my 318. slight port/polish on the heads, 4bbl carb/performer manifold, headers and a mild cam. that should get me at or near 300 hp real quick and that's all i need in a big fury. oh, and an .030 over bore. already have the internals, now i just have to break it down and get the heads to a machine shop.

don't underestimate the 318 - it can be a little thumper.

Yes, just cruise with the car. It's not a racer and will never be. Enjoy the ride at 65 miles/hour and be happy. :)
