69 Fury is whining

My 1969 Fury has a whine only when accelerating. Whine as soon as the gas pedal is pressed and then goes away when you lift off gas. Makes me think rear end.. Any advice where to start?

Good Place to start.... Sounds about rite....

We need more information from what part of the car?? front?? rear?? when did it start doing it?? is getting worse?? loud or slight?? growl or whine??

Skwerly May 6, 2014 07:52 AM

and does it sound like it's coming from the rear?

Really hard to tell if its coming from the front or rear because it only does it when driving. Just started happening. Its a low tone whine. Not a high pitch whine like a power steering pump whine. My car is a 1969 sedan. 318 auto 34,XXX original miles.

Do you hear it in the radio

Maybe it needs a nap...:laugh: just kidding

Don't drive it. In neutral wheels chocked, turn driveshaft back and forth watch for slop (u-joints, ring + pinion wear) push pull both yokes up and down (tailshaft bushing, pinion bearing, crush sleeve loose).

Lift one wheel trans in park, lift up and down, in and out turn back and forth (wheel bearing, spider gears if open, axle splines) do other side.

Now support rear, tires off ground, front wheels chocked and run the car slowly if open differential.

If you haven't found the problem try a slow drive with a friend, you in the back seat to listen. Taking out the bottom seat may help hear better through the floor.

If you've done this before disregard my step by step. You'll find it and it might be a simple adjustment so anymore high speed driving could damage it.

That's what I was thinking, rear end would whine even when coasting usually. Also trans will stop whining when the fluid heats up if it's marginally low or only whine when cold... I would start there too, good call!:hello:
