Backing Plate Bolts
 

I am in the process of changing the wheel cylinders in my 68 Chrysler Newport. All are done except for the front driver side. I had to remove the backing plate but one of the big bolts on the backing plates strpped when I took it out. Does anyone know of where to get these. It needs to have the cotter pin hole

Junk yard or have you tried your dealer ? the trucks still use them. cars are probably metric

I am going to fastenal today to see if they have a simliar bolt. I have the nut so they can match it up. I have searched for the bolts online and have found nothing. Unless they are called something else but I doubt it.

Well brand new back cylinders don't leak but the front did. What a waste don't buy tru torque.

Sorry to hear of your leaky cylinders. As for the bolts you removed. They hold the front lower ball joints in place. You want to be very careful removing those. They are under pressure from the front springs. First time I did one of these, the spring bounced the car right off the jack stand. Could have been very bad. Now I put a jack under the lower control arm for support, before I remove them. I have some of those bolts if you have a hard time finding them.

See how the jack holds up the lower control arm, and how the bolts actually go threw the spindle and the lower ball joint.

Thanks, we figured that out for the other side, as for the bolts I bought ones without the holes and drilled them myself. All went back together easy now. Returned the wheel cylinders, purchased wagners for the front and raysbestos for the rear you can see and feel the quality difference. Went to bleed them master cylinder took a dump, already had ordered it with the brake booster. Just have to install that and the brake system will be completely revamped.

Great, things are going good. You probably already know but, make sure you bleed that master on the bench before installing. Hopefully the pic might help someone else. :) I learned the way you did. :doh:
