Replace any and all worn out parts for starters. Even just one or two bad bushings can cause a decent ride to go bad very fast.

As far as the brakes go, have they been properly adjusted and bled? New hardward, shoes drums? I have four wheel drum brakes on my 68 Valiant and it stops a lot better than I ever thought it would.
