Cast iron Torqueflite and newer 440
I have found a great buy on a rebuilt 1975 440 with flat top pistons and want to put it in my 1961 Chrysler. Up until now, I have been told that the older cast iron (1961-361 "B" Block) transmission/flexplate will not bolt up to the crank on the 440. The guy I am working with is pretty sure it will.
Any comments? |
re: flex plate
the flex plate will work ok, your's has a 6 bolt crank to flex plate, and there are 4 bolts that go into the torque converter

it is NOT any kind of bolt in. the castiron trans normally only hold 370-400 horses at best. best to use the stock trans for the 440. even though a 383 al trans bolts to a 440, the inside of the trans isnt the same. just cause one chrysler trany is the same as another on the outside doesnt mean the inside is the same. if i remember right the old castiron trans did not use a flex plate. the toque converter bolted flat to the crank. with studs poking through the crank flange, with nuts on the front side of the flange. when used for a fuel race engine with an aluminum torque flite they would tap the 392 crank holes. it was very hard to do with out breaking taps. and a home made spacer system was hard to get right.
