engine price question

hey everyone

I have begun a search for a 318 motor from a dakota or ram for my 2002 dakota - I have found a range of prices on these from $300-8/900. some say they were running well (I would take that to be a plus) some were from a dakota, ram and durango.

As I do not have much experience with this and am trying to keep this close to budget friendly, does anyone have thoughts on how much this should cost?
I realize different parts of the country will be different cost wise - but any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

thanks
Sean

I don't know your mechanical abilities ? I would buy the $300 motor and spend the $600 on rings bearings and a valve job.
Unless they will give you a 90 day guar

a new-ish/rebuilt motor for $900 - that doesn't sound too bad - I think I saw new one's from a few places from about $2-3000

Also I would not pay $900 unless I could hear it run in the vehicle & be able to verify mileage.
Don't believe anything they say !!!!!!

Are these prices from a junk yard where they give you a guarentee that it is a running engine...If so then the prices you are getting are right in line...DONT buy anything from EBAY/Craigslist...On those kind of sites they dont care they just want your money and most will lie to get it...Bill

thanks - yes they are from a junkyard and they claim to be good running motors - so 350 sounds about right?
