64 cuda brakes

i had a customer come in today with his 64 cuda. he had a shop do a disk brake conversion and they totally screwed it up. what cars can i find the parts to do this conversion correctly? or should i have him buy a kit? will post pics later

Here is the article.. http://www.moparaction.com/tech/archive/disc-main.html
It looks like the calipers are on the wrong side ?????

maybe the caliper bracket too..

he told me they came off of a 70-73 cuda. the calipers seem to be 4 piston calipers. and you can see where they tried to weld up a really large crack in the rotor and tried to weld the studs to the rotor as well.

thank you for the link.

Can't see doing any welding? My only guess would be that they were trying to keep the 5 X4 bolt pattern by Welding the rotor to the old hub. VERY unsafe. Be aware doing the conversion you need to make some major changes.. Changing the control arms, master cyl ETC also changes the bolt pattern to 5X4 1/2 so new wheels would be needed IF you can find a later Dart with disk brakes Un bolt the control arms and Take the whole mess including the control arms

they are 5x4.5 bolt pattern i believe i know the rear axle came from a late model chrysler and the front hubs came from a later cuda. at least that is the info i got from him. i do feel safer doing the job over and doing it right and making sure it is safe to drive.

Wish I knew, Mike. I'm not familiar with the pre--67 stuff which is known as "early."

On the 67-up stuff there are options. There were the factory original optional disc, which was 5x4, there is something known as a "Scarebird" conversion (search Ebay) which is aftermarket, and on 67/ later cars you can use factory 73/ later A body front end parts, spindle, ball joints, and you need upper A arms.

But in your case the 4 piston setup sounds like factory early stuff. I have no idea on the availability of that stuff. Welding on a hub doesn't sound good, not at all.

ok i will do some more research on it. it seems to have the same type of control arms and lower ball joint set up as my 67 valiant. not sure what parts they used but the disk is cracking where it meets up with the hub and one of the spots has a very nasty looking crack they tried to weld up. which is in the second pic. i want to make sure i do it correctly and make sure it is safe to drive. as it is now i wouldn't drive it my self let alone a customer.

The later control arms have larger (stronger) ball joints to match the later spindle. Just study the article It has all the info you would need. Cuda should have pin type calipers. I puit some of them on My 67 Coronet that I had. Disks should be one piece with the studs pressed in.. The drums were a two piece item. The bleeder nipple & hose should be on the inside IF it is the early 4 piston offered I think in 68-69 Hard to find parts for.... I would swap it for the later stuff which is very easy to find and get parts for and you can use huge 11" rotors if you use 15" wheels
